Gardiners Bay is a small arm of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 10 mi (16 km) long and 8 mi (13 km) wide in the U.S. state of New York between the two flukelike peninsulas at the eastern end of Long Island.
It is bounded on its eastern end, where it connects to Block Island Sound, by Gardiners Island, privately owned by the Gardiner family the only intact real estate grant of the English Crown in the United States.
The British fleet assembled in Cherry Harbor in the bay before sailing to Chesapeake Bay to attack Washington, D.C. and burn the United States Capitol.

 Gardiners Bay
Gardiners Bay was launched 2 December 1944 by the Lake Washington Shipyard, Houghton, Wash.; sponsored by Mrs.
Her  fourth tour  (3 April-12 December 1953) was spent in tending amphibious patrol planes at Chinhae, and on stations in the Pescadores, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan.
Gardiners Bay received two battle stars for service in World War II and four battle stars for service in the Korean War.

 USS Gardiners Bay
Relieved as flagship by Pine Island (AV-12) on 17 July 1946, Gardiners Bay tended planes of Rescue Squadron 6 at Chimi Wan, Okinawa, until 15 August when she put to sea as part of the screen of the 3d Fleet en route to Japan.
She entered Sagami Bay, Japan, on 28 August, shifting 2 days later to Tokyo Bay as a part of the Seaplane Base Group of the Japan Occupation Forces.
After hostilities ended in Korea, Gardiner Bay made three cruises to support 7th Fleet operations in the Pacific (7 July to 22 November 1954), (28 August 1956 to 14 February 1957), and (10 June to 16 November 1957).

The law also requires that only those bay scallops having an annual growth line and measuring not less than two-and-one-quarter inches from the middle of the hinge to the middle of the bill may be harvested.
New York's bay scallop resource is primarily located in the waters of Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and situated within the five East End townships of Riverhead, Southold, Shelter Island, Southampton and East Hampton.
The dramatically reduced bay scallop harvest over the past two decades is directly attributable to the effects of Brown Tide, an algae bloom that is named for its coffee color.

Lying between the North Fork and the South Fork, are several islands, including the two large islands of Gardiners Island and Shelter Island.
The dividing line between the two forks in the west is the Peconic River.
Ferry service is available on the bay side of the fork as well.

 USN Ships--USS Gardiners Bay (AVP-39)
USS Gardiners Bay, a 2592-ton Barnegat class small seaplane tender built at Houghton, Washington, was commissioned in February 1945.
In August 1945, upon Japan's capitulation, she moved to Tokyo Bay and shifted to the China coast in early 1946.
Decommissioned in February 1958, Gardiners Bay was transferred to Norway in May of that year.

She then proceeded via Pearl Harbor to Eniwetok in the Marshalls to tend planes of Patrol Bombing Squadron 19 in a 10-day training period, thence via Saipan and Guam in the Marianas to Kerama Retto, Okinawa, where she arrived 7 June 1945 with provisions and cargo for Fleet Air Wing.
She returned to Seattle 4 October 1947; made a cruise to Eniwetok in the Marshalls (15 January-5 June 1948); and another Far East cruise (15 March-14 December 1949) which included tender operations at Guam, Yokohama, Sasebo, Okinawa and Manila.
She returned from her last cruise to Alameda, Calif. 16 November 1957; decommissioned 1 February 1958, and was transferred to Norway 17 May 1958 under the Military Assistance Program She serves the Norwegian Navy under the name of Haakon VII (A-537).

Spin fishermen of late have been very successful taking Albacore on small, metallic jigs, while fly fishermen employ 2-3" long epoxy flies which perfectly mimic the Bay Anchovies which are so prevalent in the water at that time.
As the surrounding waters begin to cool down, bluefish, false albacore and striped bass feed with abandon on the myriad of baits that are being flushed out of the bays and estuaries.

In the fall season (SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, NOVEMBER) the harbors, inlets and bays get inundated with bait fish such as Sand Eels, Bay Anchovies, Squid, Bunker, Herring and right there to feed on them before migrating south are larger Striped Bass, giant Bluefish, Bonito and False Albacore that can range up to 15 lbs.
Most of our fishing takes place around Gardiner's Island but our area extends from Cedar Point to Plum Gut, Great Gull, Little Gull, and right out to Montauk Point.
You can take lessons on the boat but it is more expensive as you have to book at least a Half-Day charter.

All members and their guests are invited to raft up or to anchor off and dink over to the party.
