Gardiners Island is a small island, approximately 5 sq mi (13 km²) in eastern Suffolk County in the U.S. state of New York.
In 1639, the island was settled by Lion Gardiner from a grant by Charles I as the first colonial English settlement in present-day New York state.
The original Gardiner reportedly purchased the island in 1639 for "a large fl dog, some powder and shot, and a few Dutch blankets." Gardiner established a plantation on the island for growing corn, wheat, fruit, and tobacco, as well for raising livestock.

 Windmills of Long Island
Like the similar smock mills on Cape Cod, Long Island windmills have always been regarded as portable items - they are not so much attached to their foundations, as simply rested upon piles of stones.
Still retaining its internal machinery, this windmill was unusual for the Island, in that it has a fantail to turn the sails into the wind.
The Gardiners Island sunken post saw mill remained unidentified for many years, since it is rectangular, and the remains are built into other buildings.
