As the U.S. military helicopter carrying Karzai was about to land in Gardiz, about noon, a rocket was fired at the aircraft but missed by 300 yards, the U.S. military said.
Rockets are often fired in Gardiz and the rest of Paktia province, as in much of Afghanistan, and they rarely hit their targets.
Gardiz is about 60 miles south of the capital, Kabul.

The alleged abuse took place between July 15 and Aug. 20, 2003, at holding facilities in Gardiz, at the southern city of Kandahar, and at the U.S. military headquarters at Bagram north of Kabul, Siddiqui said.
In Gardiz, he said, his interrogators laughed at him and said his wife and daughters were prostitutes and his sons were beggars.

GARDIZ, May 09, (Pajhwok Afghan News) -- Tribal elders in the southeastern province of Paktia complain that their allocated number of five seats for the forthcoming parliamentary elections (Wolesi Jirga) does not accurately represent the population size of the region.
During a public awareness session organized by the Afghan NGO, Wadan Afghanistan and the United Nations, the elders from tribes of Ahmadzai, Mangal raised their concerns and said they would stage demonstrations if the number of seats was not increased.
The exact number of seats is to be allocated in proportion to the population estimates for each province, which will be provided by the Central Statistics Office to the JEMB.

The coalition soldier, whose nationality was not given, was killed in a firefight between coalition forces and extremists in the Day Chopan district of Zabul province, the US military said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a suicide bomber detonated himself in front of a government office in Gardiz, the capital of Paktia province, killing himself and four passers-by and injuring 23 others, eight with serious wounds, Yousif Stanizai, Interior Ministry spokesman told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The target of the attack was not known and an investigation was ongoing, he said.

Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, Joint Chiefs chairman, briefed Pentagon reporters today and detailed that 302 prisoners are being held at Kandahar, 38 in Bagram, 16 in Mazar-e Sharif and eight aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan.
Two of the prisoners were caught by American forces Jan. 7 near Gardiz Khost, Myers said.
They were among 14 Al Qaeda fighters captured "without resistance" during interdiction operations in the area.
