  Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club
On Friday 20th June, 17 RYYC Members assembled at The Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, an imposing stone built victorian pile, standing in 20 acres of lawn and rhododendron, set on a headland overlooking Rhu marina and the Clyde to the south, and the club jetty and moorings in the Gareloch, to the north.
Meanwhile, back in Scotland, Friday night was spent at a noisy and somewhat over-priced Italian restaurant in Helensburgh with a number of the Gareloch members, a precursor to the more serious business of yacht racing on the Saturday, which dawned fair, with a nice breeze of 10-12 knots.
As the Gareloch boat fell back in the dirty air, a Gallic curse was heard from her crew, and we knew we had our friends by the throat.

Not for the first time, the Gareloch was unkind to the boat which had led for most of the race.

 The Gareloch Goddesses history
The fact that the Gareloch One Design class is still complete and active after 80 years of sailing belies a turbulent history of migration from home waters after the invasion of the Norwegian Dragons - introduced to British waters by Clyde owners.
The first mention of a proposed class in the minutes of the Gareloch Yacht club is October 22nd 1923 and by April 1924 the first boat afloat - Athene - was being trial sailed.
Finally there is the Gareloch World Championship held in late July for the 50th Anniversary Cup, which was presented by the RNCYC in 1974.
