Politics | Lord Williams of Mostyn
This almost irreplaceable figure was universally popular because the steel of his radicalism and the iron of his logic were covered by the velvet of his deft articulacy and the sheen of his sparkling wit.
Gareth Williams' rejection of gesture politics enabled him to keep together almost all of his ministerial team in the Lords during Labour's crisis over the Iraq war.
Whatever the cause of Williams' presumed heart attack, it did not arise through bottled-up frustration over Thursday's Blair-Falconer Lords reforms, as was evident to anyone who saw him that day sitting beside Lord Falconer with a healthy suntan and a smile of satisfaction.

Williams limped off in the second half of the victory against Scotland with a recurrence of a calf strain and has not trained this week.
But after extensive treatment Williams is expected to be named in an unchanged Welsh side today, with Dragons three-quarter Hal Luscombe hoping to overcome a hamstring strain to keep his place on the bench.

There came a second chance for a big storyline when Gareth Wyn had an accident in the gym and seriously damaged his kidneys.
Another big story for Ioan during his time at Pobol y Cwm, and his last as Gareth Wyn as it turned out, was the story where Gareth tried to help Karen (Rhian Jones) come to terms with being a victim of a sexual attack.
When Gareth Wyn returned to Cwmderi in the summer of 1995, Ioan was unfortunately unable to resume the role because he had been offered the lead in a remake of Poldark.

Owned by the National Trust, and lovingly cared for by tenants Huw and Bethan Williams, this thatched farmhouse looks as though it slept through the twentieth century when many similar buildings were modernised.
This trick of the eye was skilfully achieved through years of renovation by the Trust, but what makes Aberdeunant special today is not that it is a museum piece preserved in aspic, rather a living, working farm that is home to a young family.
As part of the tenancy agreement the Williams family have to open a couple of the best preserved rooms to the public once a month in the summer.
