In 1839 he settled in Van Buren county, and in March, 1846, came to this county and purchased a stock of sutler's goods and opened out in the old guard-house, near where Third and Vine streets now are, and thus he became one of the first if not the first merchant in the town.
He was born in 1831, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood upon the same fields from which, in the early part of this century, his father had removed the original forests of oak.
Polk county is largely indebted to him for the interest taken in blooded stock, and his efforts in this direction have been a success.

In the county, the population was spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who were 65 years of age or older.

He promptly responded by preparing a bill to set off a tier of townships from Jasper County on the east, and also from what was to be Warren County on the south, and attach them to Polk County.
The bill passed, the county was "squared," The Fort was made the "Seat of Justice." The sequestration of the strips from Jasper and Warren having served its purpose, they were, by legislative magnanimity, returned to their original place, and The Fort went on her way rejoicing.

KEWAUNEE COUNTY, City of Algoma: $71,624 total - $51,480 to develop new restroom facilities at the Steele Point public boat launch to Lake Michigan, and $20,144 to perform a water modeling study to address sedimentation issues in the Steele Point harbor/boat launch to Lake Michigan.
The next meeting of the Commission is tentatively scheduled for May of 2006.  Sponsors interested in making application should get in contact with regional community service specialist in their area.  Projects cannot be forwarded to the Commission for consideration until all appropriate water regulatory permits or weed harvesting/chemical permits are obtained by the sponsor.
