  WMBC: Garganey in Worcestershire, 1945
By A. A new breeding record for Worcestershire was created by the successful breeding- for the first time of a pair of Garganey near Bromsgrove.
The pair were first noted on March 25th feeding in much the same place as was favoured by Garganey in the two preceding years.
A single Garganey duck appeared on the same water on August 26th and stayed until September 2nd.

When Doug indicated that there was at least one Garganey with the Green-wingeds at Kealia, I did further research and according to Roberson, this contrast is not normally or necessarily visible in flight.
One bird I feel may be an eclipse male Ganganey with a strong face pattern and wide white bands at the leading and trailing edges of the speculum, but I could not detect any difference in the leading edge of the upper wing (in flight) from the other teal nearby.
The best I can say is that there may be Garganey present in the flock and I hope that they stay around long enough to be studied molting into alternate plumage.

There are several spring and fall records of Garganey along the West Coast, particularly in California, and also a spring record for Arizona.
Key field marks that separate Garganey from Blue-winged Teal are the prominent head markings (dark brown crown, light supercilium, dark eye line, light stripe under the eye line, and white spot in back of the bill), brownish-gray shoulder patch, and green speculum bordered on the front and rear with white.
Garganey is separated from Green-winged Teal by its larger size, heavier bill, and head pattern.

The three drake Garganey were all on Herriott's Pool at lunchtime today, as was a summer-plumage male Ruff; an unusual sight at Chew.
Meanwhile, drake Garganey were at Heron's Green Pool and Herriott's Pool, a Common Sandpiper was on the main dam, and two Common Terns were on the main lake.
A drake Garganey was again on Herriott's Pool today, with a Common Tern on the main lake.

Two Garganey in Stratford Bay were new in; other birds included the juvenile Wood Sandpiper, at least seven Common Sandpipers, four Green Sandpipers, single Redshank, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover and Yellow-legged Gull, three Common Terns, and a Raven over No.1 Picnic Site.

The one character that looks especially good for Garganey is the dark legs, but my understanding is Blue-winged in their first year can show this.
On first impression this seems a fairly normal looking Garganey to me [and I've seen thousands and kept them on my garden pond for years] The dark bar across the lower cheeks is very good for garaganey and I can't see it being reproduced by BW Teal.

However; 15 minutes later the Garganey were relocated, a pair sat asleep on the bank were visible by adjusting our position.
