Garmarna is definitely a great band—their album, Vengeance, is especially good.
I was fascinated by the contrast between the lively musicians who are all male and play with their whole bodies, really throwing themselves into it, and Emma Härdelin's motionless, deadpan singing—except her voice is anything but.
Another general trend on the album is that Garmarna's soundscape seems to be slowly moving ever further away from traditional folk and incorporating more completely synthetic effects into their music.

But for almost a decade now, Garmarna have been one of the most dynamic and innovative forces in-well, anywhere, and certainly in the Scandinavian "modern folk" scene with which they are most commonly and easily associated.
Critics who thought they were familiar with Garmarna's gothic images of medieval Sweden clearly expected that a collection of songs composed by the twelfth-century German female mystic who lent her name to the album would be more of the same.
Yet in working with the material written by their nine-hundred-year-old collaborator, Garmarna have clearly found the means to bridge that gap as well as the inspiration to continue their own musical experimentation.

Ground and Sky review - Garmarna - Hildegard von Bingen
The standard approach to these monophonic songs is to have it performed in unison by a number of female voices, as it would have been sung in her abbey, perhaps with a drone underneath to add a little texture.
What has been done here, however, is that Garmarna have added a dance beat, and rather than a drone in a single key, somehow they found chord changes to add colour to the melodies.
Those unused to medieval modes may find the tunes difficult to come to grips with, but Garmarna seem to have a very good feel for each song, which helps a little with their accessibility.

Swedish band Garmarna, whose work has adventurously mixed the traditional and modern, will be releasing an album of von Bingen's work in 2001.

While Garmarna's previous records, especially 1999's Vengeance, had a thick, shadowy sound, this is much lighter - and over the course of recording "everything has changed," explained Brisland-Ferner.

Garmarna is a remastered version of their self-titled 1993 debut EP, which has been expanded on CD by the addition of six songs from their 1992 demo.
While this album lacks the flair of later Garmarna releases, tending to stick pretty closely to a traditional folk style, it is never-the-less a spectacular album, which proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Garmarna had mastered tradition before defying it.
