Garner State Park is renowned for its beautiful Texas Hill Country scenery and its nightly dances each summer at the rock concession building constructed by the young men of CCC Company 879 in the late 1930s.
At Garner State Park, the skilled craftsmanship of the CCC workers is evidenced not only in the rock concession stand, but also in the park manager’s residence, numerous rock culverts, more than 10 miles of trails cut through the lush Frio River valley and park cabins that feature ornamental metal hinges and latches.
Garner State Park is one of 31 CCC-built Texas state parks operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Garner Park will always be dear and close in my heart as this is where I spent the "Best days of my Life" It just doesn't get any better.
As though Garner Park didn't offer enough fun and excitement by itself, there were those few rebels who camped in the old Baytown Camp (no names mentioned here, but you know who you are!) who constantly let their imaginations run wild.
Garner Park was so popular at the time that Waltrip High School (in Houston, where my sister was a student, and which I later attended) had an event called the "Garner Dance." (In the parking lot, of course.) I remember a rope swing that was downstream from the dam.

After one full summers' practice (1962) followed by the countless hours of practice with my partner in Corpus Christi during the preceding school year, she and I returned to Garner (summer of 1963) to finally be "declared" as great dancers.
