Garnethill: A Novel of Crime   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Garnethill (the name of a bleak Glasgow suburb) won the John Creasey Memorial Award for Best First Crime Novel--the British equivalent of the Edgar.
It's a book that crackles with mordant Scottish wit and throbs with the pain of badly treated mental illness, managing to be both truly frightening and immensely exhilarating at the same time.
Neither bleak nor a suburb, Garnethill is compact island of a neighbourhood in the centre of Glasgow, full of dauntingly steep hills à la Bullitt's best car chase scenes.

 BookkooB: Garnethill - Denise Mina
Not only is it "Garnethill" a well-told tale, but the characters are so well crafted that I felt like I knew them by the end of the book.
'Garnethill' is an absorbing social study of addiction, domestic abuse and incest.
Unfortunately, the murder-mystery takes a poor second place to the (admittedly excellent) character development and failed to engage me. It is clear that Maureen, the central character, is playing detective as a diversion and escape from her considerable personal problems.

Denise Mina - Scottish novelist, latest publication: Garnethill (2001)
A psychiatric patient and a survivor of sexual abuse, she is stuck in a dead-end job and a secretive relationship with Douglas, a shady therapist.
But the patients are too disturbed to talk and the staff too afraid, and when a second brutalized corpse is discovered Maureen realizes that unless she gets the killer first her life is in danger too.
Her own character is reflected to some extend in the character of Maureen in her book Garnethill; who is described by people as 'irrational' and in need of postive and immediate feedback, attention and love.

Denise Mina's first novel, GARNETHILL, is a good and honest crime novel.
Her main character is Maureen O'Donnell, an emotionally battered woman, who is trying to gain control of her own life after recuperating from a nervous breakdown months before.
I think that this is something that makes GARNETHILL a better book.

The answer for Garnethill is not only Yes Yes Yes but the book was so finely crafted that I feel as if I really have spent time with the characters and I miss them.

 RARA-AVIS Archives: RARA-AVIS: Garnethill (Gen X lifestyle)
I'm almost afraid to ask what the Gen-X lifestyle means in reference to Garnethill.
Another series that has a similar Gen-X feel to Garnethill, though funnier and by no means as dark, definitely hard-boiled at least in the later books, is Val McDermid's Kate Branigan series.
Although I believe the author, like Mina, is a Scot, the books are set in Manchester with a lot of detail about the British music business and the Manchester club scene.
