Garnierite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Garnierite is the name for a green nickel ore which is found in pockets and fissures of weathered ultramafic rocks (serpentinite, dunite, peridotite).
Garnierite consists of the Mg-rich phyllosilicates serpentine, talc, chlorite and smectite in which a high percentage of magnesium is substituted by nickel.
The lateritization of ultramafic rocks gives rise to a strong dissolution and removal of magnesium and silicium which leads to a strong residual concentration of iron and nickel in a goethite-rich surface layer (nickel limonite ore).

Garnierite is a major Nickel (Ni) ore. Garnierite is a hydrous nickel silicate, with the serpentine group of minerals.
Garnierite is mined from laterite deposits, formed by weathering and secondary mineralization of igneous rocks.
Other nickel alloys include super alloys, which are stronger and more corrosion resistant metals that are used in high temperature applications, where a particular strength is required.

MFA - CAMEO - Material Description
Nickel occurs naturally in many ores such as nicolite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and garnierite as well as in metallic meteorites.
Its abundance in the earth's crust is 99 ppm and large reserves are located in Ontario, Norway, Finland, Cuba, China, and Australia.
In Europe, nickel is prohibited in jewelry, watches, and zippers because of its carcinogenic potential via skin absorption.
