Garratt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Garratt is a type of steam locomotive that is articulated, normally in three parts.
Garratt's patent was purchased by the British firm of Beyer-Peacock who developed it, marketed and sold it extensively, as well as licensing the design to other builders; for this reason, the name Beyer-Garratt is regularly used in many countries.
In this way a Garratt crew is in exactly the same position as the crew of a pilot engine coupled to the front of a train to assist the train engine up a bank, and it is notable that such double-headed steam working in many tunnels was banned for precisely this reason of safety.

 Garratt v. Knowles
Garratt now appeals the district court's decision not to remand this matter to the state court, arguing that the plan at issue is an unfunded excess benefit plan and thus exempt from the provisions of ERISA in accordance with 29 U.S.C. 1003(b)(5).
Garratt further contends that the district court compounded its error by finding that, pursuant to the requirements of ERISA, Garratt had failed to state a proper claim upon which relief could be granted.
Garratt's principal argument in support of his position that Knowles' SERP had the sole purpose of avoiding § 415 of the Code is that the only provision that the SERP could have operated to avoid was § 415.

Garratt is between Wandsworth and Tooting; the first mayor of this village was elected towards the close of the eighteenth century; and his election came about thus: Garratt Common had been often encorached on, and in 1780 the inhabitants associated themselves together to defend their rights.
The chairman of this association was entitled Mayor, and as it happened to be the time of a general election, the society made it a law that a new “mayor” should be chosen at every general election.

To obviate the necessity of a retrial in the event this court determines that she was entitled to a judgment against Brian Dailey, the amount of her damage was found to be eleven thousand dollars.
The trial court's finding that Brian was a visitor in the Garratt backyard is supported by the evidence and negatives appellant's assertion that Brian was a trespasser and had no right to touch, move, or sit in any chair in that yard, and that contention will not receive further consideration.

The Garratts were ordered to deal with the volume and tonnage of the traffic over the heavy gradients of the North Island and to do away with the excessive use of banking engines.
These engines were noteworthy in that the coal bunker was mounted on the boiler cradle behind the cab, instead of in the customary position on the rear engine unit.
The locomotives were much too powerful for the drawgear then in general use on ordinary rolling stock and relatively short crossing sidings made it impractical to haul loads commensurate with the power of the locomotive..

 K1 - the world's first Garratt locomotive
K1 is an 0-4-0+0-4-0 articulated Garratt, one of a pair built in 1909 by Beyer Peacock for the North-East Dundas Tramway, Tasmania.
The name "Garratt" derives from the engineer Herbert William Garratt, who devised the type, and developed it in association with the Manchester firm of Beyer Peacock, which built most of the Garratts used around the world - including all those destined for the Welsh Highland.
Thus K1 should properly be termed a Garratt, and the later South African NGG16 class in use on the Welsh Highland comprises Beyer-Garratts.
