Garrett Birkhoff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Garrett Birkhoff (January 19, 1911, Princeton, New Jersey, USA - November 22, 1996, Water Mill, New York, USA) was an American mathematician.
Papers Birkhoff wrote in the 1930s, and his 1940 monograph on the subject, raised lattices into a full-blown branch of abstract algebra.
Birkhoff also founded of a new branch of mathematics, universal algebra, with his 1935 paper, On the Structure of Abstract Algebras.

Is logic empirical? - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The replacement derives from the work of Garrett Birkhoff and John von Neumann on quantum logic.
Birkhoff and von Neumann proposed to resolve those paradoxes by abandoning the principle of distributivity, thus substituting their quantum logic for classical logic.
Indeed a sort of analogy had been established in the mid-nineteen thirties by Garrett Birkhoff and John von Neumann between a non-classical propositional logic and some aspects of the measurement process in quantum mechanics.

Date: Tue, 3 Dec 1996 16:24:35 -0500 Subject: Garrett Birkhoff I learned only from NA Digest of Garrett Birkhoff's death; I had, to be sure, heard earlier that he was not well.
It is a loss that means a lot to me. Garrett was formally my thesis director, but we had only sporadic sessions in that relation, and I never really "studied with" him.
Garrett's integrity and conscience were plain and clearly felt to me. We never made a habit of talking politics, and wouldn't always have agreed if we had, but my respect for the core of his beliefs was one of the things that made me value him as a teacher.

George David Birkhoff (21 March 1884 - 12 November 1944) was an American mathematician, and one of the most important leaders in mathematics in the USA in his generation.
This combined insights from Physics on the ergodic hypothesis with an abstract formulation in terms of measure theory; it opened up a whole area related to probability theory and dynamical systems. He also worked on many other areas, initially in number theory and also on the Riemann-Hilbert problem and the three-body problem.
The charge of anti-Semitism against Birkhoff is however generally regarded as substantiated in some specific ways. The mathematician Garrett Birkhoff (1911-1996) was his son.
