The Scale Factor In Nature, Alaska Science Forum
Mattingly was speaking on the Tudor dynasty and Richard III, King of England during the latter part of the 15th century.
Mattingly stirred up a spirited debate by postulating that Richard's small size may have actually increased his effectiveness on the battlefield.
Thus, said Mattingly, Richard's armor would have been proportionally much lighter than that of a larger man, leaving him less encumbered in battle.

Mattingly is a master storyteller, sweeping the reader effortlessly from the diplomatic intrigues of court and council, across the bloody battlefields of France and the Netherlands, to the smoking gun-decks of the galleons.
Personalities come alive in his hands – Drake and Hawkins, the Duke of Medina Sidonia, who was to bear the brunt of the defeat, and Philip, toiling away in the cold Escorial, 'eyes red-rimmed, bones aching, fingers stiff', in his efforts to galvanise the forces of the Counter-Reformation against one upstart island.

The Defeat of the Spanish Armada (Garrett Mattingly)
Mattingly knows how to make the most of an exciting subject and builds his narrative around key episodes and individuals: many chapters are almost self-contained, making the volume an ideal one for piecemeal reading.
It is here that Mattingly displays what is perhaps his most distinctive trait — his refusal to think ill of anyone and his sympathy for their failings.
Mattingly does highlight Drake's destruction of Spanish barrel staves in 1587 and its contribution to the supply problems of the Spanish fleet in 1558, but otherwise his focus is political and biographical.

Shelly Monson - Garrett Mattingly's description of the events of King Philip's "Enterprise of England" is an excellent read.
It follows the story from Mary's execution at Fotheringhay to the end of 1588 on a day by day basis, looking at events not only in England and Spain, but in Rome, France, the Low Countries, and wherevere else related things were happening.
It is written in a lively and readable style, protraying the various characters as real people and often quoting from contemporary dispatches and reports.

Mattingly presents history as it should be - a clear story driven by primary sources which respects the prism of bias inherent in sources.

 Diplomacy Through the Grapevine
On one side, Garrett Mattingly defends the gossipy content of the ambassadorial dispatches.
Mattingly, surprised by their low-brow nature, struggles to put them in a positive light in his analysis, while Queller concludes that, though useful, they simply are not as spectacular as the relazione.
While Garrett Mattingly comes closest to developing a theory of the use of the dispatches, he dismisses their overall importance in the immediate world of Renaissance politics, as well as in the historical development of modern diplomacy.

ABOUT THIS SITE AND HOW TO USE IT
Although narrative history is often disdained by professional historians, I have always admired scholarly history that reads like a good novel.
Garrett Mattingly’s The Armada (1959), for example, made a strong impression upon me during my student years.
