In the British Army garrison is also used to refer to military stations such as Aldershot Catterick Tidworth and London which consist of more than one or camp and have their own military headquarters commanded by a Colonel Brigadier or Major General assisted by a Garrison Sergeant Major.
In Hebrew the term garrison unit is translated as חיל מצב (cheil which is a regular unit defending a zone such as a city a province a castle or fortress or even single building.

On the formation of the Queen's Own Highlanders in 1961 he was appointed to command the Assault Pioneer Platoon, then CSM of B Company and finally Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons).
In 1968 he was the Garrison Sergeant Major in Singapore following which he was commissioned and appointed as a Staff Officer at Headquarters 99 Gurkha brigade.
Afterwards he was the Quartermaster of the Scottish Infantry Depot until 1973 when he was seconded to the Sultan of Oman's Army and became Second in Command of the KJ, a Baluch Battalion.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC News Service, Sept. 10, 2004) – A hit-and-run driver killed Robert McCord, a retired sergeant major and employee in the Infantry Center’s Directorate of Combat Developments, Sept. 4 while he was running along Whitesville Road in Columbus, Ga. The driver has not been found.
The 48-year-old McCord, who served as the garrison sergeant major before retiring in January, was doing PT shortly after 7 a.m.
Monique Frushon said her mother, Gisela, and her stepfather settled in Columbus after his retirement because he was active in local organizations, like House of Heroes and the Sergeant Major Association.
