Topic: Garryaceae

  PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Rosidae -- Spring 1998
The disposition of the Garryaceae was not clear until relatively recently.
Hutchinson was one of the first to associate Garryaceae with the Cornales, and there it largely remained until excluded once again by Takhtajan in 1997.
The Garyales ("euasterids I") consists of Aucubaceae, Eucommiaceae, Garryaceae and Oncothecaceae.

- A new interpretation of floral morphology in the genus Garrya (Garryaceae).
Garrya (the only genus of Garryaceae) comprises 15 species distributed in western North America, Central America, and the Greater Antilles.
Molecular phylogenetic studies consistently resolve Garrya and Aucuba (the only genus of Aucubaceae, with 3-4 species in East Asia) as sister taxa in the euasterid order Garryales.

Fossil Record of the Asterids   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Garryaceae has usually been classified with the Cornaceae (dogwoods).
Molecular evidence suggests that the Garryaceae may actually be closely related to the Lamiidae, but no formal change in its classification has yet been made.
Fossils of the Garryaceae also show up in the Eocene, at the same time as most asterid groups, and much later than the cornids.
