John Garstang (May 5, 1876–September 12, 1956, Beirut) was a British archaeologist of the ancient Near East, especially Anatolia and the southern Levant.
He served as the Director of the Department of Antiquities in the British Mandate of Palestine between 1920 and 1926, as well as filling the position of Head of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (1919–1926).
Later, in 1947, Garstang founded the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara, acting as its first director (he was succeeded by Seton Lloyd).

Garstang seems equally unlikely, as there is no record of a Joseph Clark/e in the baptismal registers, and the family name Clarke is barely represented in the parish.
Samuel Leach's memoirs suggest that the family was in Garstang by Nov 1745, two years after Robert's death, and it is not too difficult to imagine a scenario in which Joseph would have been sent down to Preston for his education, returning afterwards to his home in Garstang.
The town was part of the medieval manor of Garstang, owned from 1756 by the Keppel family, who retained property interests in the town as late as 1919.

The council of the Rural District of Garstang was established in 1894.
The council offices were erected in 1913 by the Board of Guardians and are situated at the north end of the High St. and acquired by the Rural District Council in 1946, in 1974 the Rural District Council merged with the new Wyre Borough Council with all administration now being centred at Poulton-le-Fylde.
The Parish Church of Garstang is St. Helen, which dates from 1160 and situated in Churchtown about one and a half miles west of Garstang.

On a recent visit to Garstang, the 'world's first Fairtrade Town', Alex Yeboah Afari, a banana producer from the VREL co-operative in Ghana was amazed to see 'Share the Passion - buy Fairtrade' posters up and down the high street with shops, businesses, cafés, supermarkets, even the local hardware store declared their support for Fairtrade.
Garstang proves that this Fairtrade ideal IS achievable and has resulted in over 70% public awareness of Fairtrade and the Fairtrade Mark in Garstang.
I was invited to speak at a Public Meeting in April 2000 when Garstang was officially declared a Fairtrade Town, as much by default and Clerk intervention leading to a public vote, as anything.

There has been a settlement in Garstang since AD597 and in 1597 an Act of Elizabeth I decreed that a market could be held.
In the days of the Turnpike roads Garstang was a busy coaching town with coaches rattling through its cobbled streets disgorging tired and hungry passengers into its inns many of which still exist.
For many years Garstang changed little but since the early 1960's extensive residential development has taken place with the urban population including the separate parishes of Catterall, Barnacre-with-Bonds and Cabus trebling to about 8,000 and a further extension planned.

Later in 1997 a Garstang Fairtrade Guide was published although, at that time, only five places in Garstang sold Fairtrade items.
On his visit George Foulkes said "...the beacon that has started here in Garstang can spread like wildfire across the whole of the country." Of course if the fire is to spread the people of Garstang need to keep the beacon burning.
The 2002 Garstang Fairtrade / Local Produce Directory was launched on the same day as the plaque unveiling and is now available from the Discovery Centre and other outlets in and around Garstang.

Garstang is a small market town, which grew up where Lancashire’s great north-south main road crosses the Wyre.
The name Garstang may have sprung from the Saxon word "Gaerstung" meaning common land or meadowland.
