Tander had never before won a race, let alone a round of the V8 championship, in his home state of Western Australia.
The three wins moved Tander to second in the V8 Supercar championship behind his Toll HSV teammate Rick Kelly who, for the most part of the weekend, was his only rival.
Garth Tander (foreground) notched a winning treble when he led the V8 field home in all three races of the second round at Perth.

Tander back on pole - Motorsport - Sport - theage.com.au
HOLDEN V8 driver Garth Tander went out early in the top-10 shootout for the Sandown 500, posted a slick time of one minute 10.8817 seconds, and defied the championship series superstars to gamble on tyre and car combinations in changeable weather to run him down.
It was at Queensland Raceway in 2000 when Tander last occupied pole position, coincidentally in the same endurance classic which, at the time, had been shifted north to a circuit close to Ipswich.
Tander was on the podium in Darwin and at Queensland Raceway, and was close in the previous round at Oran Park.

Garth Tander gave the Garry Rogers Commodore team a strong opening to the season when he won the opening round of the Shell Championship Series at Phillip Island at the weekend.

However, Tander's pair of second places was sufficient to place him at the top of the title table, ahead of the Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife, who finished the weekend with two thirds.
