Dundee Sub Aqua Club - Trip Report Garvellachs November 1999
The journey out to the small group of islands called the Garvellachs gently passed until we had to pass through the Grey Dogs, a sound between the isles of Scarba and Lunga.
The many whirlpools were in tremendous form, amazing was the levels of the water between east and west halves of the sound where it is not uncommon to see 1 metre differences.
Duncan, the skipper is very knowledgeable around this area where he has worked for over ten years and to no surprise powers the boat through the dogs.

I got up one Saturday morning thinking that I was in for a days work round the house, I had just put up new guttering and had the underside of the wood to paint, as well as cut the grass and other bits and bobs.
Down to 37m, 2mins before deco and we headed back up and along the wall, by know the current had picked up and it was hard going, so we swam away from the wall and headed for the surface, all in it was a good dive.
The second dive was between the largest of the islands Garbh Eileach and A`Chùli, there was a slight current but not to bad, bottomed out about 18m and what a difference, Vis stunning and it was like diving in an aquarium.

The southern island of the Garvellach chain was one of their first monasteries: Eileach an Naoimh ("aylach a- nooyv" - The Rocky place of the Saints), also known as Holy Isle.
It was probably established by Saint Bridget and Saint Brendan "the navigator", an Irish explorer and Brother, known for his great voyages to Iceland, America and his battle with a whale.

 Garvellachs 2000
Last year when we were in Oban with Pete and Helen we did one dive on the Garvellachs, a small group of very small islands south-west of Oban.
There is a small slip on the east side of the islands so we drove there and unloaded the spare cylinders, picnic, deck chairs etc (yes it was sunny again) and did a really beautiful drifting kind of dive on the west side of the biggest 'lump of rock'.
The best diving definitely has to be on the west side of the Garvellachs so next year I hope we concentrate more on that side and find some more notable dive sites to add to the collection of 'dives I would do again'.
