Gary Indiana (Population 102,746, 2000 Census) is one of the newest and largest cities in the State.
Gary lies in northern Lake County, on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Gary's fortunes have been strongly linked to those of the steel industry, and a period of expansion in the earlier decades of the 20th century was followed by a near-total collapse during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Gary's roots reach as far back as the 1600's when Marquette, the great French explorer who was one of the first explorers of the Mississippi River, used the Calumet Portage between the little Calumet regions.
Gary, the Chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, dreamt of erecting the largest steel plant in the world on a lake site midway between the ore fields of Minnesota and the coal fields of the south.
Gary, long known as a great ethnic melting pot, is built on the pride of great cultures and the ingenuity of its prodigious heritage.

 Gary, Indiana at AllExperts
To the East of Gary is Porter County and its Northwesternmost city of Portage.
However, to the West of Gary are the strongly urban cities of Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago and then the Indiana/Illinois border and the southernmost neighborhood of the City of Chicago itself.
Another indication of Gary's closeness to Chicago (and, in the minds of some, its fundamental disconnectedness from the rest of Indiana) is the fact that Gary (and the rest of Northwest Indiana) is in the Central Time Zone, along with Chicago.

Urban exploration: Gary, Indiana, ghost town
Gary's decline had begun in the previous couple of years, and it had nothing to do with the (future) decline of that American steel industry.
Government did not build Gary in its first sixty years; it did not all-but-kill Gary in the subsequent few years; and, it is not plausibly responsible for the lack of a renaissance in Gary, other than for the quite deleterious effects that are inherent in a welfare state's breeding of dependency and irresponsibility.
Gary needs a more progressive vison to make revitalize this town by creating an urban art center that can use the pain, blight, misery, and despair as a medium of contrast and hope, linking he glorious bustling past to a hopefully bright future.

Laid out in the form of "a game of triple solitaire," Gary Indiana's sixth novel is beautifully written, and it skillfully evokes a certain near-great, over-40, Bohemian crowd in New York, allowing the reader to peer into their bedrooms at home and their vacation accommodations in Ibiza, Santa Fe, Provincetown, and Istanbul.
The story ends at about the same moment as Paul Auster's "Brooklyn Follies," but to his credit Gary Indiana builds up to the brink of the cataclysm with more credibility, realizing that a return to self-obsession is only a matter of time.
Well written, funny, but also tragically sad, Gary Indiana follows a group of people living in New York, Santa Fe and one through Istanbul. At the start of this, I really didn't know if I was going to finish.
