Active as a writer, composer and teacher, Gary Barwin is the author of numerous pieces of published poetry and fiction.
Gary was born in Northern Ireland on February 10, 1964, a day when “neither planets nor tins of soup aligned.” On the street where he grew up, the neighborhood children often gathered in a big group, playing spontaneous games, holding contests and making up great dramas.
A lively and enthusiastic performer, Gary Barwin is likely to arrive with a pocket full of worms, an unusual musical instrument, or a newly invented word—all to encourage children to explore the original creative play structure: the imagination.

 Eye - Poet Head - 02.13.97
Barwin, who has published two conventional books, The Mud Game and Cruelty To Fabulous Animals, concocts a poetry of the mixed metaphor, where ideas, words and objects are interchangeable, where pastoral figures from opera and fable share a surreal landscape with lawyers, politicians and suburbanites.
A Barwin poem is also an object lesson in the relationship between thought and language.
The surrealist art of the early century valued novelty over convention, and its techniques included a series of absurd games designed to introduce random elements and to shut down the rational mind long enough to allow the free flow of images from the subconscious.
