Procol Harum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The group would have many personnel changes [1], but their "classic" lineup for their first three albums was Gary Brooker (piano and lead vocals), Robin Trower (guitar and lead vocals), Matthew Fisher (organ and lead vocals), David Knights (bass), B.J. Wilson (drums), and Keith Reid (lyricist).
The group often combined the two into a brilliantly dynamic fusion, but by 1972 the disparities in style became too great; the end of an era was marked for Procol, with the release of their fifth album Broken Barricades, and subsequent departure of Trower to form his own power trio band.
Brooker and Procol returned to success on the music charts in the following years with a distinctly symphonic rock sound, often backed by symphony orchestras.

 Procol Harum
Gary's singing might not always be resonant, and the pomp sometimes drowns out the message; but don't forget that Keith Reid is one of art rock's best lyricists, after all.
Yet Brooker shows he still hasn't lost his knack for summoning hooks out of thin air, and thus, even if the instrumental parts never get you in a frenzy, the vocal melodies will probably please and soothe you anyway, and occasionally you'll stumble upon an organ or piano riff that is, indeed, quite lovable.
Since Gary Brooker was the undisputable leader of the band and main composer, I also got interested in taking a sneak peak at his output, which isn't that large - the man only had three or four records out in all.

Gary Brooker then followed with what is obviously a favorite of Ringo's, Brooker's signature tune, "White Shade of Pale." For this number, Brooker stuck to his Clavinet keyboard, while Mark Rivera came down to join him, playing Brooker's famous Hammond organ part for the song.

Brooker reformed the band and quickly recorded an LP that spotlights his collaborations with Dylan-influenced lyricist Reid - Fisher gets in just one instrumental ("Repent Walpurgis").
Brooker's bluesy baritone is a less idiosyncratic and more expressive than Ian Anderson's; there's hardly a hint of Anderson's snottiness in Reid's poetic lyrics; Brooker and Fisher add a playful variety of instruments and some majestic orchestral arrangements (title track; "Wreck Of The Hesperus"); and Trower has finally matured into a major-league talent.

After 10 albums with Procol Harum, lead singer, composer, and keyboard player Gary Brooker launched his solo career with this album.
Brooker also tried a couple of tunes by Stiff Records pub-rocker Mickey Jupp (Jupp's versions are better) and Murray Head's "Say It Ain't So, Joe" (Roger Daltrey's version is better).
The result was a varied set that succeeded in sounding like something other than Procol Harum's 11th album, although it did not demonstrate that Gary Brooker solo was going to be an improvement over the group.
