Gary was so open and honest that he even admitted we were having a conversation instead of an interview.
Gary: Connecting the dots, I guess it would be that Van Halen, at the time was managed by Ray Daniels, who also managed Extreme.
Gary: Well, it was one song from a band that did a lot of different types of songs.

In his teenage years, Cherone turned to singing in local bands and was heavily influenced by the reigning rock frontmen of the day; most notably Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Paul Stanley of KISS, and Queen's Freddie Mercury.

The dark, brooding quality of Cherone's '80s-metal-screamer voice, and his humorless emotional delivery, which comes across as a severe kind of naïveté, are a perfect match for the pretensions of rock opera in general, and well suited to the character of Jesus of Nazareth.
That Cherone was able to appear deaf to the humorous implications of the role only heightened the message of the musical.
And inasmuch as he's both Eddie's and Alex's junior (Cherone's 36, Alex and Eddie are in their 40s), his impact on the band has been far greater than anyone might have predicted.

Cherone is also reluctant to speak with Christian media for fear that his pro-life views will be written off by mainstream news outlets, Kemper said.
Kemper said Cherone was already frustrated with the growing number of musicians who were championing the pro-abortion movement when earlier this year he heard Kemper sharing his pro-life views on a Los Angeles radio talk show.
In return, American Life League plans to present Cherone with a "Courage Award" at an Aug. 14 ceremony in Washington, D.C. Kemper hopes it won’t be long before the next Gary Cherone emerges from the shadows to stand up for the unborn.

Raised in a family of five brothers (and one of a set of fraternal twins) hailing from the east of Massachusetts, Gary Cherone began his pursuit of a career in music only after his ambition to become a professional basketball player was brought to an end by an injury to his knee.
Later in the year after the demise of Extreme, in what appeared to be the big break of his career, Cherone was chosen to become the third vocalist for arena rock juggernaut Van Halen.
Eager to get back to making his own music, Cherone put together Tribe of Judah, a band whose name and material more clearly displayed the religious beliefs hinted at in his Extreme-era songs; the debut album Exit Elvis was released in 2002 on the independent Spitfire label.
