Guide to Scoring Baseball -- Fourth Inning
To record the single we draw a line from home plate to where the ball was retrieved by the outfielder, mark his path along the bases with a line from home to first and a tail to indicate he stopped at first.
To indicate this, we move Gaetti over from first to second with a line along the base paths, and show that he stopped at second with a little tail.
Things like pitching while not facing the batter, faking pitches while not on the slab or attempting to quick pitch are all balks that aren't seen very often but are in the rules to keep the contest between pitcher, batter and runner about pitching, not trickery.

The Crawfish Boxes :: Gaetti Fired
Gary Gaetti was fired from his position of hitting coach by the Houston Astros tonight.
I don't for one minute believe that Gary Gaetti was responsible for Jason Lane's.205 batting average, or for Preston Wilson's early season barrage of strikeouts, or for Brad Ausmus' recent 0 for 40.
His firing (like Lane's demotion) is thus a sign that complacency is not going to be OK, that people within the organization are going to need to take responsibility for their charges, and as such, I am all over the move, like it even better than I liked the Huff move.

Now I don't want to rail against a fellow Louisianian (Gaetti makes his home in Covington, just down the road from me), but the Astros have a number of players who have proven to be good, if not above average hitters who don't produce on a consistent basis and in key situations.
Gaetti and pitching coach Jim Hickey came to the Astros from the Astros AAA team in New Orleans at the same time Phil Garner took over for Jimy Williams.
Gaetti can only do so much; he can prepare hitters and get together a game plan on how to face the opposing pitcher, but he can't, I don't think, teach clutch hitting or hitting with RISP.
