The technological impetus for the Art of Noise was the advent of the Fairlight CMI sampler, an electronic musical instrument that Horn was reportedly among the first to purchase.
You see, all that has happened is that Gary and I started something, it was taken away, and we have taken steps to get it back.” In the same interview, Dudley indicated she felt parts of Who's Afraid were of dubious quality.
According to an interview with J.J. Jeczalik reported in the ZTT fanzine Outside World, in 1991, Jeczalik, Anne Dudley, and GaryLangan were inspired by the commercial success of The FON Mixes and had discussed reuniting the group as a trio again.
Langan and Schurrer's job was, first, to recreate the original stereo mix for release in high-quality SACD format, and second, to reinterpret Wayne's original vision in 5.1 surround.
Gary and Gaëtan were able to reproduce nearly all of these effects to their satisfaction using plug-ins within Pro Tools; likewise, the EQ that would originally have been applied at Advision's API console.
GaryLangan and Gaëtan Schurrer approached the job with one eye on the creative possibilities offered by the 5.1 medium, but without losing sight of the principles that had guided the original mix.

He, for one, is the first to admit that his strength today lies in nurturing new bands instead of traipsing through chemically doused havens where the the crisp and tight metallic rhythms throw the heaving throngs of tribalistic bodies into a frenzy.
Twelve years on, Langan seems appreciative and humbled by the experiences of the last decade, and still remains a slave to the rhythm but in a more subtle way.
Langan disagrees: "I think those days are gone because of the way the band was put together, and formed, and the fact that it was three different people and we've grown apart.
Gary’s recording career began as an assistant engineer at SARM Studios where he worked closely with founder and renowned producer Gary Lyons, his first and foremost tutor, Mike Stone, Roy Thomas Baker and the interminable Trevor Horn.
This was a personal landmark for Gary as well as the music industry in general as it broke new barriers in the academy’s awards due to it being, a.
Gary highlights this as a great experience, which allowed him to pass on his skills to those as passionate as himself as well as forging strong links within the Japanese market.
Along with engineers Mike Stone, Gary Lyons and Geoff Workman, Baker took the helm on a variety of consoles at the sessions, including a custom-built desk at Rockfield, a Cadac at the Roundhouse, and "an old, blue Neve with big knobs on it" at Wessex.
Langan's first task at the sessions was to put together a composite multitrack master from the three distinct sections of the song.
Langan first became involved with Queen when Roy Thomas Baker brought two songs from the Sheer Heart Attack album to SARM for remixing.
In the meantime however, D'Haene and Busé hadn't been lying around, as they had been recording their songs in the studio of brother broer Geert (with the goal to make a cd they would issue themselves).
With the Sony-interest in the band, things got a little more ambitious, and GaryLangan (one of the founders of Art of Noise, and producer of countless bands such as ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Scritti Politti, The The...) was sent in by the record company.
Langan didn't get full control over the production, but he did steer the sound of the band in a slightly different direction in the Ace-Studio in Aartselaar.

Naomh Brid hit back with a wonderful score from near the sideline by Pauric McDaid (the full-forward hit six top class scores in all) and they had a good goal opportunity two minutes later, an effort from Dermot Langan was only palmed by the Robert Emmets keeper and Marcus Curran then sent a pass astray.
GaryLangan did have a Naomh Brid point, but at the other end Jonathan McLaughlin availed of an easy free opportunity to tap over from 21m.
Naomh Brid again had a great chance as GaryLangan availed of a mistake in the Emmets defence to put Dermot Curristan through.
He, along with Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, and GaryLangan, were creators of the noise.
With the exception of Trevor Horn, it was the first time fans got to see who were the Art Of Noise (for you trivia hounds, engineer GaryLangan is the judge with the mask who gets a headache and remembers his tale of a turtle.) Weird video, beautiful song, it became a minor hit.
However, Dudley, Jeczalik, and Langan felt "they" were the musical brain behind the machine, and after tasting success they wanted more.
Art Of Noise was now the team of Dudley, Jeczalik, and Langan, and they found a new home with a new label, China Records.
They were also asked to do a lot of outside work, and in time they found themselves working with Paul McCartney, John Parr, and Billy Idol.
GaryLangan had wanted to continue working as an engineer and felt confined in AOL, so he would depart.

Gary specializes in top class recording as well as stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixing.
He has recently been working with Andrew WK, recording tracks for Natalie Imbruglia, including her current hit single "That Day" and recorded, with Brian Eno and an all-star line-up, including Bono and Thom Yorke, the current single "What's Going On".
I chose a brilliant, old school engineer, GaryLangan, who's fabulous.
Initially, there was a little bit of trepidation about this big move of having a band, but after a couple of months we realised it was working out.
I think there was potential for Happy? to be a great album but I think we had the wrong producer, I mean GaryLangans a very good producer, a really nice guy, but he was the wrong guy.
And what Gary did was he filled it all up, so everything was all sort of 145;Art of Noise;, because thats what he was in before.
Art Of Noise: GaryLangan, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik.
For three years Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, GaryLangan and Trevor Horn endlessly remixed a collection of found sounds, rhythms, melodies and thematic motifs into a number of releases for Horn's ZTT Records.
After the other three split from Horn in 1985, themes from these recordings constantly reappeared in their work, but it was not until 1998 that these original recordings were reissued on CD.
The Art of Noise's first full-length release, from 1984, is also their best and most intriguing.
Its effects were felt equally in postmodern avant-garde circles and the hippest of dance clubs.
Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik and GaryLangan's work has both melodic and rhythmic sophistication and, perhaps more importantly, a playful sense of humor.
Starting out as a mysterious, Trevor Horn led experimental studio outfit, the primary contributors to the adventure were Royal College Of Music graduate, Anne Dudley; producer/arranger J.J. Jeczalik and songwriter, instrumentalist and engineer/producer GaryLangan.
Horn stayed at the helm of ZTT Records, his big screen sonic architecture fashioning mega hits for the aforementioned Frankie, as well as overseeing hits for Seal, Rod Stewart, Simple Minds, Malcolm McLaren, TaTu Belle And Sebastian and many more.
Hip-hop beats, drum and bass, vocal contributions from actor John Hurt and rap pioneer Rakim show the team have lost none of their sense of adventure.
