Gary Provost - "The Writer's Writer" - Home
The late Gary Provost, youngest of nine children, was born in Boston on November 14, 1944.  Remarkably, he was the seventh son of a seventh son.  Gary's childhood was spent in poverty, yet he maintained a unique perspective on life.  (Both are reflected in his first YA novel--The Pork Chop War published by Bradbury Press.)
After graduating from high school in 1962, Gary hitch-hiked around the country and began a succession of thirty-five jobs which he later said “didn’t pay much, but gave me a lot to write about, and also would some day be glamorous on the back of a dust jacket.”
During his writing career, Gary Provost authored seven critically acclaimed books for writers, including NAL’s The Freelance Writer’s Handbook, and 100 Ways To Improve Your Writing, and several WD top-sellers, such as How To Write and Sell True Crime, and Make Your Words Work (which the publishers call a “crystallization” of Gary’s wisdom...

Provost also includes many exercises that aren't boring, and actually quickly enforce the point he is making in the chapters.
The fact that Provost knows what he is talking about is evident as soon as you read the first page.

Gary Provost has taken his own advice when writing this book, it is well presented, comprehensive and full of useful examples.
Provost also makes readers comfortable with him when he admits the enormous risk inherent in writing a book about writing: He knows there must be thousands of readers just waiting to find an error in his work and to take two points off with a sharp red pencil!

Of Good Report--February 2004--Page Three   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Gary Provost, in his book Make your Words Work, wrote, "When you quote a person, don't slow the pace by taking time to describe the quote as having been 'exclaimed' or 'uttered' or 'opined'." It slows the dialogue and "there is no reader resistance to the simple work 'said'."
Even when your character is asking a question, it is appripriate to say "she said" in place of "she asked".
Provost admits that there are times when you will get some added meaning from "exclaimed" or "announced," but generally the quote should contain its own tone of voice.

 INTRODUCTION
When Gary graduated from high school, instead of going to college he hitch-hiked around the country from city to city, slept on park benches, pan-handled in the parks.
Gary and I used to joke that may be the worst sentence he ever wrote.
I confess that as a junior reporter on a local weekly newspaper, at about the same age as Gary, I wrote a few sentences that were probably worse - and were printed with my byline on them by my editor, no doubt to teach me a lesson for some now-forgotten journalistic transgression.

OPERATORS OF KINGSTON ADULT RESIDENCE ACCUSED OF FRAUD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The allegation of fraud stems from a KAR policy that monthly room and board rates are set on a sliding scale and based solely on a resident's income, rather than their accumulated personal assets.
They did this by establishing joint bank accounts with residents, making unauthorized withdrawals and in one case securing a personalized signature stamp that was fraudulently used to endorse financial instruments and documents.
Checks were then drawn on this account, to pay Provost's personal expenses, including $55,000 used to pay off the balance on several car loans, $16,000 to a boat dealer, and an additional $10,000 for custom decorating and design work.

Las Vegas altering itself into a Disneyland of "family entertainment" is the subject of this smarmy book by the author of Without Mercy: Obsession and Murder Under the Influence.
Leading the transformation, according to Provost, is Circus Circus Enterprises, with its vast hotels boasting round-the-clock entertainment for children and adults alike, convenience stores and cheap food, as well as slot machines and gaming tables.
Provost's book is thorough and quick-witted, and he does labor to be fair despite his obvious admiration for Bennett, Schaeffer, and MGM Grand's Steve Wynn.
