Gary Russell told a friend that his wife had been begging for his methadone and that he had given her about 40 milligrams.
The friend said Gary Russell had told him that he had awakened to find his wife dead, went back to sleep for a couple of hours, took their children to his father's home and then contacted police.
Russell initially denied to police that he had given his wife methadone but later admitted he had, saying he did because she had been nagging him to do so for months.

Gary Russell could have done with the helping hand of Christopher Bulis here, in devising some really devious puzzles, just as he could learn from Lawrence Miles the way to write a complex plot which grips you all the way.

Russell has put a lot of work into the research of this novel, and the science and historical elements of the piece are all the better for it.
Yes, Russell's portrayal of Australia is a little off, some of the places visited are spelt wrong and the geography and knowledge of the roads is a little muddled up.

It could be said that, in some ways, Gary Russell's novelization of the Doctor Who TV movie is the most important book released this year.
Whoever did make the decision clearly had little idea of what he or she was dealing with, because this fact in of itself completely ruins any attempt Gary made at producing a quality piece of writing.
Gary also (fortunately) sheds a bit more light on some of the major plot points of the movie, which were glossed over far too much onscreen; an explanation of the Master's snake form, for instance, is most welcome, and proves perfectly sensible.

Perhaps "long-awaited" is not quite the correct way to phrase the return of the Wirrrn (Gary Russell insists on using the novelisation spelling) and the Foamasi, but I was quite curious to see how they would turn out.
One wishes that Russell had taken more time in crafting this portion of the book, as there was a lot of wasted potential here.
Gary Russell's problem as a writer in this story is that he is too self-indulgent, having so much fun with old ideas and concepts that he forgets to pace the plot nicely.

"Divided Loyalties" by Gary Russell brings back an old foe, the Celestial Toymaker, in a battle of wits against the Fifth Doctor.
Like a lot of Gary Russell books, there is a lot of references to past stories (both TV and book), which means you have to be a pretty well versed fan to get into them.
But in a way, that's what 1980s Who producer John Nathan-Turner always did, so perhaps in that way "Divided Loyalties" is a Fifth Doctor adventure with a very similar feel to the era.
