Gary is the largest city located in Lake County in northwest Indiana, near the city of Chicago.
Gary's decline was brought on by layoffs at the steel plants; today, Gary faces numerous difficulties, including unemployment, major economic problems and a high rate of crime.
Gary is also a major stop along the South Shore railroad, a commuter rail system (and the United States' last operating interurban train system) that runs between Chicago and South Bend, Indiana.

The Gary SouthShore RailCats unveiled their new uniforms for the 2004 season Saturday at an open house that attracted hundreds of fans to U. Steel Yard.
Widelski and Gates sported the RailCats new alternate jerseys, which are fl with gray lettering, including an RC on the left chest.
Bowers modeled the new road uniforms, which are gray and have the city “Gary” in large block letters across the front of the jersey.

The city of Gary is paying the Gary SouthShore RailCats $2.2 million because the city's new stadium wasn't completed for play in 2002.
The RailCats certainly have the support of the media, but the team has sold only 150 season tickets; I certainly hope they can do better and silence the folks who said that $45 million was too much to pay for a Northern League stadium.
I am more than a little surprised that the Gary SouthShore RailCats (independent; Northern League) have only sold 150 season tickets for 2003, given that the team has already played for a year and the new $45-million stadium has received a ton of press both locally and nationally.

The building of U.S. Steel Yard caused quite a bit of stir because of where is was being built (apparently Gary doesn't have a great reputation) and the high price tag (over $40 million).
Free parking can be found in numerous small lots that are a short distance from the park.
While the park is located in a sketchy area of Gary, there is plenty of police presence, so fans should not be concerned for their safety.
