Gary Sprake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sprake became known during and after his career as a goalkeeper who was brilliant but occasionally prone to appalling mistakes, but he spent more than a decade at the club as No.1 keeper and won enough honours in the game to suggest he was a better keeper than given credit for.
Sprake was holding the ball and was set to throw it to the left back, Terry Cooper, only to curtail his throw when he spotted Liverpool winger Ian Callaghan running towards the area he planned to hurl the ball.
Sprake's liability was not as abundant this time, as a quick free kick was delivered into the danger zone by John Hollins and Ian Hutchinson managed to glance a header past Sprake at the near post.

leedsfans.org.uk: Leeds United Player Profile: Gary Sprake
Gary Sprake is a name synonymous with goalkeeping cock-ups: mention his name to most non-Leeds fans and they'll start humming "Careless Hands".
Sprake was very much part of that tream until late on, and missed out on the Cup win over Arsenal (when Harvey was excellant).
Gary had a habit of catching the ball with one of his legs quite high as he jumped- he scrunched his studs into the face of Hutchinson (I think) right in front of me after the refs back was turned.

Sprake was a member of the successful Don Revie Leeds side of the late 1960s and early 1970s and won just about every medal going in the game with the exception of the European Cup.
Sprake actually met Eddie Gray last week for the first time since 1973 – the pair didn't speak when they were in the same room at Birmingham City two years ago – but there are many others who refuse to acknowledge his presence ands he remains firmly the outcast of the all-conquering squad.
Sprake didn't take the calls from Revie or his former skipper Billy Bremner, declined a weekend meet with his former boss at a secluded Leeds location, and went ahead with his decision to speak to the newspaper working on the story.

Sprake, Reaney and Hunter retained their places, but it remained a gamble for Revie to rely on such unproven talent against one of the most powerful sides in the division.
However, Gary Sprake and his beleaguered defence stood up well to the test, and it was the 70th minute before Stoke managed to narrow the deficit, Bebbington netting the rebound after Sprake spilled Ratcliffe's effort.

Sprake added to his list with a terrible performance in the 1970 FA Cup final, going down in instalments just before half-time and letting Chelsea midfielder Peter Houseman's lame 25-yard shot slip under his body.
With the ball resting on the platform of his palm in the manner of a tray-wielding butler presenting the gentleman of the house with a bottle of his favoured port, Dibble watched in horror as cheeky Forest winger Gary Crosby came from behind, nodded the ball to the ground, and walked it into the goal.
In homage to former Wales goalkeeper Gary Sprake (see above), the current minder of the Cymru onion bag replicated the Leeds legend's error in the 1970 Cup final by going down in instalments just before half-time and letting West Brom midfielder Sean Gregan's lame 25-yard shot slip under his body.

This is only two moore than his recognized understudy, Tony Millington, of Swamsea, who stepped in for Sprake in all three of last season´s home internationals.
Sprake made his debut early in Don Revie´s managerial career and his consistency has been tough on his Leeds born deputy.

Revie's stewardship started in some difficulty; the club was in some financial difficulty and in the 1961-1962 season only a win in the final game of the season saved the club from relegation to Division 3.
However, Revie developed a new team around the Scottish midfielder Bobby Collins, bringing through a crop of outstanding youngsters, including Norman Hunter, Paul Reaney, Gary Sprake and Billy Bremner, and acquiring winger Johnny Giles from Manchester United.
The club finished its first season back in the first division in fourth place, and the board continued to make money available to Wilkinson, allowing the purchases of England left back Tony Dorigo, England midfielder Steve Hodge and striker Rod Wallace.

Alongside Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal, Shankly reckoned that Hull City were worthy of a place among the andeacute;lite.

The book also challenges recollections of the period that have become football truths.

Take this description of Peter Houseman's equalising goal for Chelsea in the 1970 FA Cup Final: "Gary Sprake, usually the safest of goalkeepers, had the ball covered, but allowed it to go under his diving body into the net." Whoa.
Sprake, the very word an unhappy combination of sprain and break, is still a synonym for clumsiness.
