Gary "U.S." Bonds (born Gary Anderson, June 6, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll singer.
Bonds continues to release albums, including collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, and today is a mainstay of the nostalgia concert circuit.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Bonds was living in Norfolk, Virginia in the 1950's when he began singing publicly in church, and with a group called The Turks.

Little was heard of Bonds in the 90s, other than a cameo appearance with other musical artists in the movie Blues Brothers 2000.
Their collaboration was maintained with On The Line, which included Bonds" version of the Box Tops' "Soul Deep", but he later asserted his independence with the self-produced Standing In The Line Of Fire.
Between 1961 and 1962 Bonds enjoyed further similar-sounding hits with "School Is Out", "School Is In", "Dear Lady Twist" and "Twist Twist Senora", but his career then went into sharp decline.

His manager changed it so he could use the line "Buy U.S. Bonds." When this song came out, Gary's stage name was just "U.S. Bonds." Pretty clever, but too many people, including lots of DJs, got it wrong and thought it was the name of a group.
Bonds sued Chubby Checker in 1962, claiming he stole this for his song "Dancin' Party." It was settled out of court.
Before Bonds recorded this, it was an instrumental by The Church Street Five called "A Night With Daddy G." Bond's manager added lyrics to it and had him record it.

Gary U.S. Bonds certainly has some famous friends - among the guests on “Back In 20” are Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and former Allman Brother Dickey Betts.
Yet somehow Bonds has remained one of those shadowy figures that linger at the edges of American music, one whose name and fame extend beyond the reach of their music.
It’s not offensive, but some of the punch that should be there, given the size of the band (horns, keys, background singers) is lacking.

The first few songs are examples of non-funky funk-influenced rock that provide yet more evidence that there's a place in an uninteresting part of hell for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
