EMC - The Early Modern Center
Gary Waller seems to believe that literature is first and foremost a symptom of gender assignments, reflecting the incessant construction of a bipolar gender ideology.
It is Wroth, who, in Waller’s opinion, furnishes her contemporary readers and us with the glimpse at an alternative space without the gender binary.
In addition, there are enough deep layers and embedded discourses in her text — such as the problem of mimesis, time, the exploitation of recessional space — that might not be wholly concerned with the feminist strand of current academic theories and their seductive self-confirming stories.

Emerson. "Lady Mary Wroth: Autonomy From the Traditional Role of Woman."
Many critics, including Gary Waller, argue that Wroth very closely imitates her father and her uncle and that her success as a female author may very well have to do with her.
She was seen as "the inheritor of the family muse" (Waller 141).
Wroth's autonomy is much more clear in retrospect than at the time, due to the fact that "even fairly recent scholarship hastened to undervalue the literary worth of Wroth’s romance, defining her achievements primarily in terms of her uncle’s generic influence" (Miller/Waller 7).

Lady Mary Wroth's approach towards the style of those poems is in keeping with the prevalent attitudes towards language by the end of the sixteenth century.
As Gary Waller asserts, "by the end of the century, ornament is increasingly suspect, moderation and clarity being admired for both prose and poetry" ("Language" 50).
