The Kansas Corporation Commission has scheduled three public hearings, in Wichita, Topeka and Overland Park, to hear from customers of Kansas Gas Service on the company's request for a $73.3 million rate hike for residential customers.
Kansas Gas is the dominant provider of natural gas in the state, serving 642,000 customers.
He said Kansas Gas will analyze past usage and put each customer in the plan that should be the most economical for them.

Aquila Energy and Kansas Gas Service plan to begin adjusting customers' bills in August to avoid having to present the customers with bigger bills at the end of the year.
That is expected to happen often in the near future because gas prices are high, stored gas is in short supply, and prices are expected to rise even further in the peak winter season, said George Minter, a spokesman for Aquila.
Neither Kansas Gas nor Aquila controls the price customers pay for gas, which is set by the open market and passed straight to consumers.

The accident is being investigated by the Kansas Fire Marshal's Office, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the Department of Transportation's Office of Pipeline Safety and the Kansas Corporation Commission, which regulates utilities.

Kansas produced $4.7 billion worth of oil and natural gas in 2005, according to estimates by geologists at the Kansas Geological Survey.
This is an increase of about $1.2 billion, or 33 percent, from $3.5 billion worth of oil and gas produced by the state's fields in 2004, Tim Carr, head of the survey's energy research section, said Monday.
Kansas fields produced about 3.7 million barrels of oil in 2005, about the same as 2004.
