GMAW - Gas Metal Arc Welding
Gas metal arc welding consists of a DC arc burning between a thin bare metal wire electrode and the workpiece.
Gas metal arc welding is the most widely used process in the world today.
Gas metal arc welding is used on all thicknesses of steels, aluminum, nickel, stainless steels etc. The MAG process of GMAW is suitable both for steel and unalloyed, low-alloy and high-alloy based materials.

Gas metal arc welding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), sometimes referred to by its subtypes, metal inert gas (MIG) welding or metal active gas (MAG) welding, is a semi-automatic or automatic arc welding process in which a continuous and consumable wire electrode and a shielding gas are fed through a welding gun.
The principles of gas metal arc welding began to be developed around the turn of the 19th century, with Humphry Davy's discovery of the electric arc in 1800.
GMAW with globular metal transfer is often considered the most undesirable of the four major GMAW variations, because of its tendency to produce high heat, a poor weld surface, and spatter.

 Gas Metal Arc Welding
Metal is transferred from the electrode to the work only during a period when the electrode is in contact with the weld pool.
Electrodes designed to be used with carbon dioxide shielding gas require extra deoxidizers in their formulation because in the heat of the arc, the carbon dioxide dissociates to carbon monoxide and oxygen, which can cause oxidation of the weld metal.
In flux-cored arc welding, shielding is accomplished by the decomposition of the electrode core or by a combination of this and surrounding the arc with a shielding gas supplied from an external source.

 Welding
Gas tungsten arc welding, commonly called TIG (tungsten inert gas), produces an arc between a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and the sheet metal workpieces.
A weld may be overdesigned to boost the strength of a thin sheet metal part (designed thin for cost saving), but final cost may surpass that of using heavier gauge metal in the first place.
For fillet welds, stresses are assumed to act in shear and weld strength depends on leg size, length of the weld, type of weld metal, and loading direction.

GAS METAL-ARC WELDING-GMAW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The method of delivery of the filler metal allows GMAW welding to be basically a one-handed operation which does not require the same degree of skill as GTAW.
Gas metal-arc welding equipment basically consists of four units: the power supply, the wire feeding mechanism, the welding gun (also referred to as the torch), and the gas supply.
The function of the welding gun is to carry the electrode wire, the welding current, and the shielding gas to the arc area.

 Welding of Magnesium-base Alloys
The strength of a weld joint is lowered in base metal, in the work-hardened condition, as a result of recrystalization and grain growth in the heat-affected zone.
Gas tungsten arc is recommended for thinner materials and gas metal arc is recommended for thicker materials, however, there is considerable overlap.
The gas metal arc welding process is used for the medium to thicker sections.

Gas Metal Arc Welding - Welding Applications
During Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) (also known as Metal Inert Gas or MIG welding, an electric arc is created between the workpiece and a consumable bare wire electrode.
The arc constantly melts the wire as it is fed to the weld puddle.
The weld metal is shielded from the atmosphere by a flow of an inert gas, or gas mixture.

The arc and weld area are enveloped in a protective gas shield.
The arc is self adjusting; any variation in the arc length made by the welder produces a change in the burn off rate of the electrode, and the arc re-establishes its original length.
Metal powder and flux coated wires are also used with CO shielding gas to allow high deposition rates and to improve weld metal quality.
