Oxy-fuel welding and cutting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oxy-fuel welding of metal is commonly called oxyacetylene welding since acetylene is the predominant choice for a fuel, or often simply gas welding.
The apparatus used in gas welding consists basically of an oxygen source and a fuel gas source (usually cylinders), two pressure regulators and two flexible hoses (one of each for each cylinder), and a torch.
Although gas welding does not generate the same intensity of ultraviolet light as arc welding, UV light is produced.

GMAW - Gas Metal Arc Welding
Gas metal arc welding consists of a DC arc burning between a thin bare metal wire electrode and the workpiece.
Gas metal arc welding is the most widely used process in the world today.
Gas metal arc welding is used on all thicknesses of steels, aluminum, nickel, stainless steels etc. The MAG process of GMAW is suitable both for steel and unalloyed, low-alloy and high-alloy based materials.

 Welding
The arc and weld pool formed using a bare wire electrode was protected by helium gas, readily available at that time.
MIG is similar to MMA in that heat for welding is produced by forming an arc between a metal electrode and the workpiece; the electrode melts to form the weld bead.
Thus, the shielding gas will have a substantial effect on the stability of the arc and metal transfer and the behaviour of the weld pool, in particular, its penetration.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding - Advanced Technology
The welding arc is created between a tungsten electrode, which is non-consumable, and the weld pool.
The welding can be autogenous (without filler material), or with filler rod/wire.
Because of the shielding and high concentration of heat it is used on refractory and reactive metals which oxidize readily without inert gas protection.
