The one-mile riverbank tract from the causeway bridge to the bend in the Frederica River at the Robertson Inn is called Gascoigne Bluff.
During the Revolutionary War live oak timbers were cut on St. Simons and loaded at Gascoigne Bluff for shipment to be used in building of the U.S. Frigate Constitution, better known as "Old Ironsides," and other vessels.
Gascoigne Bluff became the property of Alexander Bissett.

In addition to his duty of protecting the coast, Gascoigne was directed to survey the coast and harbors and chart the area for the British Admiralty, this being the first such survey ever made of this coast.
This Dodge mill at Gascoigne Bluff was the third largest lumber mill in our country at that tie and was capable of handling one hundred twenty-five thousand feet per day.
The oaks of the Bluff and the ballast-lined banks of Frederica River awaited the new activity which was to come when the causeway linking St. Simons with the mainland was opened 11 July 1924.

The Captain bought some property on the southwest corner of the island--"Gascoigne's Bluff," which is now the first spot on the island seen by anyone driving over the Causeway from Brunswick.

Hamilton Plantation was built on the land known as Gascoigne Bluff, and today is where the causeway comes onto the island, including the land of large trees of the county park and the grounds of Epworth-by-the Sea.
The first owner of this tract of land was Captain James Gascoigne, commander of the sloop-o-war, Hawk, which convoyed the settlers to Frederica in 1736.
As the Captain was in charge of the ships stationed in the area for the defense of the colony, so it was in these waters that the vessels were anchored and kept in repair.

Tiring of this, I decided to leave the mainland in favor of Gascoigne Bluff on Saint Simons Island, which has been a successful relic hunting spot for me since the mid-1990s.

 The Brunswick News
The Brunswick resident cast his line into the Frederica River on Tuesday from the floating dock at the bottom of a new fishing pier constructed at Gascoigne Bluff.
It marked the fifth time Harvey's fished from the recently completed pier and dock, and a cooler full of whiting is evidence the fishing here is quite good.
Parking plans — unpaved, in order to preserve the natural setting of Gascoigne Bluff — also are being developed.

But that’s OK, a spokesman for the developers said, because they were stopping all work anyway until the debate about the recent cutting of trees along the scenic highway gets sorted out.
On Saturday, a handful of residents of Gascoigne Bluff, across the highway from the 170-acre, 70-home Barton’s Run development, called their county councilman to complain that the developers were clear-cutting the side of the road.
County Administrator Gary Kubic said he’s concerned, and had his zoning enforcers issue a stop-work order on Monday until county officials could do an analysis of what happened.

They can vote to annex the 170-acre Tarver tract across S.C. 46 from Gascoigne Bluff, allowing developers with D.R. Horton to build 450 new homes on it.
The plans show the Tarver property is located south of The Farm, with its southern border as S.C. 46 across from the Gascoigne Bluff community.
Horton's plans for the property are to use it for 450 new single-family homes, with some resembling those in The Farm, some those in Horton's Island West community.

Construction is slated to begin in December on a public fishing pier near Gascoigne Bluff.
Susan Shipman, director of the DNR's Coastal Resources Division, said the pier will be just what the community needs.
