Gascon is the traditional language of the market places in the North-Eastern part of the Basque country (Eastern Lower Navarra and Soule).
In Gascon it is almost impossible to find loan words from Basque, on the other hand it shows a great many phonological and morphosyntactic peculiarities (with respect to other Romance languages) which probably go back to Basque substratum influence.
Gascon shows quite a number of changes which are due to language loss, as it is more and more substituted by French.

The inhabitants of Soulan when I was there (1970-72) represented almost the entire progress of the village's shift from Gascon to French - the oldest inhabitants were the first generation to all go to school and learn French as a second language, while the youngest inhabitants were almost all monolingual French speakers.
Soulan lies in right smack in the middle of the Gascon- Languedocien isogloss bundle, and in a very small area affected by some Couserannais sound changes, which makes the dialect about as stigmatized as it can be.
On the one hand, it is similar to the national stigmatization of regional dialects altogether in the face of French.

In the Antiquity, the inhabitants of Gascony were the Aquitanians, who spoke a language related to the old Basque language.
Although the Basque clans dominated Gascony, the gradual abandonment of the Basque related Aquitanian language in favor of a local vulgar Latin, which was well under its way, was not reversed.
However, as the language of their subjects was mostly a vulgar Latin that evolved into Gascon, their names are also recorded in Gascon.
