Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak) and II was the choice for the traverse.
On the way to the summit of Gasherbrum II, they passed a dead body that Reinhold also had passed in 1982, at that time being accused for "climbing over dead bodies".
The pair erected their small bivouac tent on the saddle between Gasherbrum II and I. This was their fourth day of climbing.

Gasherbrum means "mountain of the light" in the old Balti dialect.
The height of the mountain was determined during the period 1889-1929, while it was photographed for the first time also by an English expeditionary M. Conway, during this time the mountain was called the highest or hidden peak due to their estrangement and the sustained formations of the pyramid.
The highest second of the 14,K2 at 8611 meters, Gasherbrum I at 8068 meters, Broad Peak at 8047 meters, Gasherbrum II at 8035 meters (all in the range of the Karakorum), and Nanga Parbat 8126 meters (range of Himalaya).

Climbing Gasherbrum IV by a new route is a very difficult undertaking and is therefore a mountaineering objective fraught with uncertainty.
In an era where many of the 8000 meter peaks are made easier by the sheer numbers of climbers and prior fixed ropes and ladders, an ascent of Gasherbrum IV is still much the same difficult proposition it was when first climbed in 1958.
We were the last of 18 expeditions to leave the Gasherbrum basecamp in 1999 and we removed much of what had been left behind by others who were there with us.

Ed Viesturs leans on his ice ax at the 8,068-meter summit of Gasherbrum I, also as known as Hidden Peak.
It was the fourth 8,000-meter peak Ed climbed during a 10-week trip in 1995.
Because they were already acclimated from climbing Everest, Makalu, and Gasherbrum II in the preceding weeks, Viesturs and his partners were able to reach this summit in a blistering 30 hours from base camp.

Pasaban, born in August 1973, started Alpine climbing when she was 16 and appears to have a very modest CV of ascents.
On the 17th July the experienced Ukrainian climber, Vladimir Pestrikov, sustained a bad injury at c6,000m on the South Gasherbrum glacier, when he and several other members were caught in an avalanche.
At the time of writing there are few details of this or the accident that occurred later in the season to Mohammad Oraiz, a Pakistan porter on an (unsuccessful) Iranian expedition, who is known to have died.
