Gasoline direct injection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gasoline direct injection or GDI is a variant of fuel injection employed in modern four stroke petrol engines.
The gasoline is injected right into the combustion chamber of each cylinder, as opposed to conventional multi point fuel injection that happens in the intake manifold.
Direct injection can also be accompanied by traditional methods such as VVT and VLIM, which provide conventional control over airflow swirl patterns at stoichiometric and full power modes.

AutoSpeed - Bosch DI-Motronic Gasoline Direct Injection
BMW is using a direct injection V12 in their 760iL range-topper - in fact, in the not too distant future, direct injection is likely to be found on examples of every manufacturer's engines.
Critical in the adoption of the new direct injection technology was a resulting gain in fuel economy under high loads - the direct injection race car reduced fuel consumption by 8 per cent and additionally, also yielded up to 9 per cent more torque throughout the engine rev range.
Bosch's high-pressure injection system for gasoline engines is based on a pressure reservoir and a fuel rail, which a high-pressure pump charges to a regulated pressure of up to 120 bar (over 1700 psi!) Because of this very high pressure, the fuel can be injected directly into the combustion chamber via electro-magnetic injectors.

This comnpany proposes air assisted direct injection, in which compressed air is used to assist the atomisation of fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber, in order to fulfil emission standards with a variety of 2 stroke engines with displacements ranging from 800 cm3 to 2000 cm3 (ref 7).
In fact, up to the eighties, the gasoline injection systems were always derived from diesel fuel injector systems; the excessive control rigidity and the spray characteristics of these systems have proved unsuitable for application on gasoline engines and specially on stratified charge engines.
Associated to direct injection in gasoline engines is the present concept of stratified charge (ref. 10) that is really the technological step forward for achieving reduction in consumption (along with CO2 emission reductions that are not possible to achieve with conventional internal combustion systems).

COST AND BENEFITS OF THE GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION ENGINE
Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine technology has received considerable attention over the last few years as a way to significantly improve fuel efficiency without making a major shift away from conventional internal combustion technology.
Each step of this evolution, from mechanically based carburation, to throttle body fuel injection, through multi-point and finally sequential multi-point fuel injection, has taken advantage of improvements in fuel injector and electronic control technology to achieve incremental gains in the control of internal combustion engines.
It is attractive to two-stroke engine designers because of the inherent ability of in-cylinder injection to eliminate the exhaust of uncombusted fuel during the period of overlap in intake and exhaust valve opening.

The problem is that you have to run high enough fuel pressures for proper vaporization while simultaneously overcoming the cylinder pressures of compression.
Very few production cars use this technology, and the reason is not emissions, in fact, direct cylinder injection is very efficient, saves gas, makes more power, and provides cleaner combustion, it IS however an expensive system when you add up the cost of the components and management systems.
For NA performance short of a custom cylinder head and a completely new direct injection system, ITB's are as close as you're going to get, and at $2k, it's still between 1/3rd and 1/4 the cost of a direct cylinder injection setup for JUST THE PARTS.
