Sanz seems to have been a typical "cultured gentelman", and his works are not limited to music.
Sanz almost singlehandedly introduced a large solo repertoire for the guitar in Spain.
In addition Sanz has thrown in a couple of small desciptive pieces like "La Esfachata de Nápoles" as well as arrangements of trumpet fanfares(!) from all over Europe.

Gaspar Sanz has been called "the outstanding man of the guitar in seventeenth century Spain." In spite of this praise, surprisingly little is known about his life.
Sanz was born in 1640 to a prosperous family in Calanda in the province of Aragòn, a region of Spain that is known for its folk dances.
Sanz returned to Spain and was appointed instructor of guitar to Don Juan, the natural son of King Philip IV and Maria Calderon, a noted actress of the day.

 The Music of Gaspar Sanz
The rhythm in Sanz's Zarabanda and Canarios is similar to that of the guajiras and peteneras styles of flamenco, his Jácaras is similar to soleá, and his Pasacalles, if taken in sixes, bears a certain similarity to sevillanas or fandangos de Huelva and, when taken in twelves, can be likened to soleá.
The rhythm of Sanz's Zarabanda and Canarios is often called "de amalgama" in modern flamenco terminology, due to the asymmetrical intervals between the accented beats (3+3+2+2+2).
In recent years, arrangements of Sanz's tablature have been written for modern tuning, moving passages from the bass to the treble strings, in an effort to maintain what appears to be the original melodic line.

Garcia-Arrines states there are eight editions of Gaspar Sanz´s work in the 17 th century : The first one in 1674 and the eighth in 1679 although it still conserves the date 1674 as the three books are the complete work.
In the case of an idiomatic music, so typical of which it was born, besides written in a specific instrumental table, the problem of adaptations and distortions was like that from the beginning.

Gaspar Sanz's lovely Folías are known to all enthusiasts and on this occasion they can be heard being strummed on a guitarilla strung with four and five high-pitched courses - the tuning preferred by the author in order to "puntear con primor, y dulçura" (to pluck with delicacy and sweetness).
Sanz's Folia is the quintessential baroque form: a set of melodic and rhythmic variations on a chord progression, that is both dramatic and stately in feel.
This is a Folia-medley starts with an anonymous Folia including some variations by Gaspar Sanz, the second Folia is played as an improvisation by the ensemble and the last part is the Barcelona Manuscript for salterio solo dated back to 1764.

When Smith's solo guitar selections from Gaspar Sanz's highly influential "Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española" (Instruction of Music for Spanish Guitar) were first released, Smith had little or no competition on CD.
For example, compare the three performers' renditions of the most famous selection here, the lively Canerios (described by Sanz as "a quick and noisy dance with its origins seemingly in the Canary Islands").
While Smith's rendering certainly impresses, it's not nearly as quick (5:12 compared to Moreno's 4:07 or Lislevand's astonishing 3:01!) or noisy (Moreno's buoyant additional use of guitar, lute, and percussion and Lislevand's fiery extra guitars and castanets famously spice up their versions).

From the earliest century of guitar music, composers such as Gaspar Sanz and Alonso Mudarra show the origins of this kind of work, which includes dissonances that occasionally sound like modern composition.
His technique is dazzling, with a purity and clarity even in the fast and fiery parts, and never a squishy note to be heard.
The music takes us back to the mid 16th century with Alonso Mudarra's "Fantasia", which is short and charming, as well as another early composer, Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), with his "Canarios", up to many 20th century masters like de Falla, Torroba, and the only non-Spaniard represented, the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos.

There are a number of works which span a large selection of music especially the instrumental pieces which confirm Spanish involvement in the musical scene as one of crucial importance.
Amongst the composers one may find Gaspar Sanz, Hidalgo, Guereau and de Ribayaz, all of them important stalwarts in the post Renaissance period.
My immediate comparison was AliaVox's otherwise excellent CD with Jordi Savall and the Hesperion XX which also contains a good number of sacred pieces but I could just plump for Weigand's brilliant musicality all round, especially at this price.
