When Portola organized his expedition for the march from San Diego Bay to Monterey, many of his soldiers were ill from scurvy, and at one time on the march the sick list numbered nineteen men, including the governor and Rivera, his chief officer.
In 1585, Captain Francisco de Gali, sailing for the Philippines, was directed to sail, on the return voyage, as far north as the weather would permit, and on reaching the coast of California, examine the land and the harbors on his way homeward, make maps of all, and report all that he accomplished.
Portola followed the same route that he took on the retreat from Monterey, and on May 24th arrived at the Ensenada Grande under Punta de Pinos, near the cross they had erected, December 10th.

The Gaspar de Portolà Catalonian Studies Program was created through an agreement signed in 1986 between the University of California, Berkeley, and the Generalitat de Catalunya, the government of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, for the purpose of promoting education, research and cultural events on Catalonian themes.
Funded by a grant from the Generalitat de Catalunya, the program is a research unit of International and Area Studies.
