  Gassho - Glossary
The gassho is considered one of the most beautiful of gestures and is the Indian gesture of greeting, farewell, thanks and reverence.
It is called the Kenjitsushin gassho - "steadfast-being-gassho" and is formed by simply placing the palms and ten fingers together at chest level and at a 45 degree angle.
In later centuries, this Gassho was adopted by the Christians as the gesture of prayer.

The act of gassho is done by putting the palms of one's hands together in front of the heart and bowing the head.
Gassho may be done sitting or standing; with eyes closed or open; and with or without the ojuzu beads.
The underlying sentiment of the Harmony Gassho is that you will try your best to have a spirit of cooperation with others, and always be as calm and patient as possible.

Gassho & Bowing, The Zen Center of Los Angeles
The word gassho literally means "to place the two palms together." Of all the mudras (symbolic hand-gestures or positions) we use, it is perhaps the most fundamental, for it arises directly from the depths of enlightenment.
But regardless of the style or variety of the gassho, and in whatever setting it is used, the fundamental point of the gassho is to be one with the Three Treasures: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
When we bow, it is always accompanied by gassho, although the gassho itself may not always be accompanied by bowing.

 kubose dharma legacy
Gassho is a symbol of the multitude of different things also being at the same time One.
In later centuries, Gassho was adopted by the Christians as the gesture of prayer supposedly introduced by St. Francis of Assisi when he saw the gesture in the Holy Land being used by people from the east.
Although Gassho may serve other functions when done as a public gesture (e.g., as a social greeting or as a means of promoting a kind of religious solidarity), as a spiritual practice, the source of its power is in its private, personal quality.

Prayer breathing is a technique from Hapkido, it involves holding the hands in a prayer position in front of the heart and breathing in the heavenly Chi through the crown and into the Hara on the inhalation and forcing the energy out through the hands on the exhalation.
When doing this activity the hands are held in the Gassho or prayer position in front of the heart.
The purpose of gassho meditation is to increase the energy of the practitioner and to put him/her in a meditative frame of mind for giving Reiki.

//Gassho// has been a pioneer in these explorations, and it is a pleasure to see other journals drawing from and expanding upon our example.
In this issue of //Gassho//, there are articles containing endnotes, a bibliography, and a glossary; these "appendages" to the textual "body" are elegantly served by WorldWideWeb (WWW) browsers, but present a somewhat cumbersome dilemma for traditional linear formatting and reading.
I am pleased to see this issue of //Gassho// manifest, and, even so, the predominance of male voices addressing women's issues is conspicuous.

A Gassho styled private house is roofed with thatch.
However, the advent of a plastic sheet allowed people to spend 2 days for re-roofing, so the first day is set for scaffolding and "Yane-mukuri" and roofing with thatch is supposed to be held on the second day.
Re-roofing requires approximately 10,000 bunches of thatch but it is all affected by a thickness of thatch and an area of a roof after all.

Questions to Master Deshimaru: What is the meaning of gassho the salutation with hands placed palm to palm?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In Zen, too, when you perform gassho you are recognizing God; and yet originally the Buddha did not agree with the traditional belief that there was God on one side and humans on the other, God good and humans bad.
When Buddha first came into the world he said, "I am the highest existence." (I don't believe he really said that because babies don't talk, but that is the legend handed down in the sutras.) From the moment of his birth he rejected all systems.
Holding your arms level for gassho is not the same thing as hunching your back over or letting your shoulders droop.
