Insect larvae, adult Coleoptera, and Gasteropoda are the most impor- tant constituents of the nestling diet.
Stationary forms such as the pupae are not expected to appear in the "Berlese" samples except when they fall through the sieve accidentally.
Many Gasteropoda can also probably be considered with the stationary forms because they do not move quickly enough to escape dessication in the funnel.

Microstructural Characacterization of Shell Components in the Mollusc Physa sp.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Summary: Shells of the freshwater, pulmonate snail Physa (Mollusca, Gasteropoda), ranging from 0.5 to 10 mm in length, were studied using scanning microscopy, x-ray analysis, and infrared spectroscopy.
Results obtained suggest that the shell is composed of aragonite, which occurs in several distinct crystalline forms.
Qualitative elemental analysis, using an energy-dispersive spectrometer, corroborates the presence of calcium, phosphorus and sulphur ions.

The Science of Conchology affords a very delightful and instructive amusement for the leisure hours of those who, retiring occasionally from the gaieties of fashionable life, seek pleasure in the quiet contemplation of some of the smaller, but not less wonderful operations of creative wisdom.
These animals are called MOLLUSCA, and perhaps the best description of them will be found in De Blainville's "manual de Malacologie et de Conchyliologie".

For a product to be labelled as "Fruits de mer", 100% of the mix must be small edible marine invertebrates with a shell at the time of harvest, i.e.
crustaceans, echinoderms and molluscs of the class Bivalvia and Gasteropoda.
Species from the Cephalopoda class do not have a protective shell and therefore are not included in the definition of "Fruits de mer." Examples of "Fruits de mer" includes, but is not limited to, clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, whelks, shrimp, sea urchins, lobster, crab.
