Baker's "Geographic Dictionary of Alaska" says of Gastineau Channel: "So named on Homfray's manuscript map of 1867, furnished to the Western Bay Company's Steamers, which in turn took its name from the Gastineau or Gatineau River of Quebec, a branch of the Ottawa." This explanation is unsatisfactory.
Gastineau was born in London in 1820, the son of a noted English water color artist.
Early in 1881 he was sent to the new mining camp on Gastineau Channel with a detachment of 22 men to keep order and was active in establishing the town.

The channel is navigable by large ships only from the south east as far as the bridge connecting Douglas Island with the mainland.
Between the bridge and the airport in Mendenhall Valley, the channel becomes navigable only to smaller craft and only at high tide.

Coast Guard Station Juneau crews Thursday rescued two men from Gastineau Channel after their pleasure boat caught fire and they abandoned ship.
The station’s 47-foot and 25-foot small boats and crews were in Gastineau Channel conducting routine missions when the distress calls came in.
The 47-foot boat crew was on scene within a minute or two and had the Lium’s rescued from the water moments later.

The wettest place in Juneau is the "rain belt," encompassing both sides of Gastineau Channel from approximately Sheep Creek extending north to Salmon Creek and including downtown.
First, any southerly flow in Gastineau Channel is squeezed and forced up as the channel narrows because of the protruding terrain along Salisbury Ridge, Mount Roberts and Mount Juneau.
Heintzleman Ridge (Thunder Mountain) is another choke point in the flow up Gastineau Channel and lifting over the ridge may add spillover rain into the valley.

An additional 230,000 fish (2.3 million pounds) were harvested in Gastineau Channel, for a current season total of 1,580,000 fish (15.1 million pounds) harvested for cost recovery.
A total of 1,250,000 chum (11.9 million pounds) have been harvested at Amalga Harbor and 228,000 chum (2.3 million pounds) were taken in Gastineau Channel near Sheep Creek through yesterday, July 24, for a grand total to date of 1,478,000 chum (14.2 million pounds).
Cumulative cost recovery totals through yesterday are 606,000 fish (6.3 million pounds) at Amalga Harbor and 154,000 fish (1.6 million pounds) at Gastineau Channel near Sheep Creek, for a total of 760,000 fish (7.9 million pounds).
