Leroux was a true enthusiast of the adventure novel genre, and ever ready to spring to its defense when it was attacked by the literary establishment.
Leroux used irony and pastiche as literary weapons and sprinkled sharp-edged jokes through his works, some of which are now difficult to appreciate out of their period context.
Leroux may well have invented the 'faction' style of novel writing in which real characters, events and places are interspersed with the fictional elements of the narrative with such precision that the join between truth and imagination is blurred to the point of invisibility.

Gaston Leroux's famous gothic novel of intrigue and romance beneath the Paris Opera House has spawned a number of spinoffs; this storybook adaptation is not among the more felicitous.
Characters and their motivations are scantily developed; the prose has a rushed, breathless quality that is overly melodramatic even for its subject; and, as presented, many specifics of the plot, as well as its eventual resolution and meaning, seem likely to leave children bewildered.
I found Leroux's literary style sometimes confusing, since he alternates writing in the 3rd person (as the omniscient narrator) and the first person--with several different characters telling their own stories.

Leroux was very smart, writing a novel like he was only reporting something --and not creating a work of fiction.
Leroux's original creation, however, is quite a bit different: he is a professional torturer and a serial killer whose evil nature is mirrored in his grotesque physical appearance.
And while the exposition style sometimes works, that of having the story be told as a series of events which Monsieur Leroux is reporting as a journalist instead of telling as a fictional tale, sometimes it kind of gets in the way and isn't fully effective.

In 1910, the mystery novelist Gaston Leroux, working from scraps of history, theatrical lore, and his own fertile imagination, created a masterpiece in "Le fantome de l'opera," the story of a disfigured composer who lives in the labyrinthine depths of the Paris Opera.
As the Phantom strikes again and again, targeting foes from a jealous diva to a romantic rival, Leroux spins a thriller of obsession and violence with, at its center, a tormented murderer who awakens our deepest fears and sympathies.
The inspiration for Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running musical, Leroux's novel is still more riveting than anything Broadway could produce.
