 | | Posted: Friday December 31, 1999 04:53 PM SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- With the finish line less than 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) away, Paul Tergat of Kenya sprinted ahead of five other runners to win his fourth St. Silvester road race Friday. |
 | | The 30-year-old Tergat, who won in 1995, 1996 and 1998, equaled the four-victory record shared by only three other runners since the race was first held in 1925: Gaston Roelants of Belgium (1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968); Colombia's Victor Mora (1972, 1973, 1975 and 1981); and Ecuador's Rolando Vera (1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989). |
 | | Tergat completed the 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) course through the wide avenues and narrow streets of South America's largest city in 44 minutes, 35 seconds for a top prize of 10,000 reals (US$5,500). |
