  WXC 97 - News
Roelants is the one legend to have known both.
Roelants’ first race was in 1959 when, as a 22 year-old, he finished a modest 27th.
As a track steeplechaser Roelants was a 1962 European and 1964 Olympic gold medallist and also set two world records before turning his attention, with great effect, to the marathon.

Torch touches down in Europe for last relay leg before Olympics - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Those games also featured the first use of white doves, which were released as a symbol of peace and reconciliation two years after the end of World War I. That tradition, however, was halted after some doves were accidentally burned in the Olympic flame at the Seoul Games in 1988.
The torch went through much of Antwerp by 140 relay runners over a 29-mile course, starting with Belgian Olympic gold medalist Gaston Roelants, the 3,000-meter hurdles champion at the 1964 Tokyo Games.
Others who carried the torch included cycling great Eddy Merckx, who won the Tour de France five times, and was overwhelmed at having participated.

Cool Running :: “Fitness comes from intensity”- really?
Roelants was record holder of steeple, then moved to marathon.
Second, this is a world class athlete with years of mileage under his belt and with his, as Canova would say, 'aerobic house' already built.
This type of periodization might be appropriate for Roelants and his peers, but most runners would benefit more from building the mileage first, then going to speed, IMO.

SpokesmanReview.com - When Lindgren ran, records fell
That got Lindgren into the Los Angeles Invitational in the Sports Arena in mid-January, where he lopped an amazing 14 seconds off his 2-mile record before 13,000 fans.
Lindgren finished second by less than 5 seconds to Gaston Roelants of Belgium, the world record holder in the steeplechase.
The mark wouldn't be a high school record because it was an open race.

Running & Racing - If this is a midlife crisis, it's acceptable
For the past two years, I have obsessively been pouring over the books I read and talked about when I first started this distance running venture 25 years ago.
I have spent countless hours on e-bay bidding on old Sports Illustrated's and Track and Field News with runners such as Frank Shorter, Ron Clarke and Gaston Roelants on the covers.
I find myself staring for a long time at the pictures — Shorter shaking the hand of Leonid Mikitenko on the Aug. 3, 1970, cover of SI after Shorter beat him in the 10,000 meter at Leningrad...

Posted: Friday December 31, 1999 04:53 PM SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- With the finish line less than 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) away, Paul Tergat of Kenya sprinted ahead of five other runners to win his fourth St. Silvester road race Friday.
The 30-year-old Tergat, who won in 1995, 1996 and 1998, equaled the four-victory record shared by only three other runners since the race was first held in 1925: Gaston Roelants of Belgium (1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968); Colombia's Victor Mora (1972, 1973, 1975 and 1981); and Ecuador's Rolando Vera (1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989).
Tergat completed the 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) course through the wide avenues and narrow streets of South America's largest city in 44 minutes, 35 seconds for a top prize of 10,000 reals (US$5,500).
