The majority of John Thomson’s photographic work was produced using what is known as the ‘wet-collodion’ process.
Thomson used a variety of cameras, both full-plate and stereo, although none of his instruments have survived.
They had to be strong and relatively portable, and were made from hard woods to withstand tropical climates.

Granet turned at once and offered his hand to the other man. Only Geraldine Conyers, who was a young woman given to noticing things, and who had also reasons of her own for being interested, observed the rather peculiar scrutiny with which each regarded the other.
Major Thomson bowed, and a moment later they all made their way along the corridor, across the restaurant, searched for their names on the cards and took their places at the table which had been reserved for them.
She leaned towards her neighbour on the other side and Major Thomson was able to resume the role of attentive observer, a role which seemed somehow his by destiny.

2001 Reviews: Portia Coughlan, The Qualities of Zero, The Attic etc., Giulio Cesare, Snow White
Tremblay has Gaston label the English language as "shit" and to demonstrate how unattractive it is he has Gaston utter a series of English words, like "Popsicle sticks", emphasizing their consonant clusters.
O'Connor's performance is in perfect accord with what we learn about Gaston at the very end of the play, but until that time it is hard to decide whether the child-like delivery and emphasis on plosives and sibilants is an affectation or part of the character.
Gaston lies to make himself seem better than he is, but by presenting him thus, Tremblay makes it difficult for us get involved with a story so subject to contradiction.

As the former Easter Road playing hero takes a break to recover from the shock of last month's sudden end to his short career as the club's manager, Gaston Sauzee is waiting for the boy he brought up by the fishing rivers near their tiny village in the South of France to return home.
Now his family have broke their silence on what they see as scandalous treatment of a French football legend - with 69-year-old Gaston saying: 'Franck's head is spinning.
Speaking from the village in the Ardeche valley where Sauzee's family have lived for five generations, Gaston stated: 'Football is obviously a very tough business and you can't take things for granted the way you might in any normal career.

But remember: You are reading the review of a Phantom rube, who knows next to nothing about Phantom-iana (note to self: Check Amazon.com for a " 'Phantom' for Dummies" book), and would only go to a stage musical at gunpoint.
As for hardcore Phantomaniacs (they've read Gaston Leroux's original book, own a signed poster of Lon Chaney, have built a Sarah Brightman shrine in their living room, attended 14 stage productions in London and New York, and so on), I know they'll have their druthers.
Some lyrics are spoken, some songs have been trimmed, and the big expansive gestures required for stage musicals have been pared to subtler levels, to suggest just a few potential areas of impassioned debate.
