Gaston Egmond Thorn (born September 3 1928), Luxembourg politician, was President of the European Commission, the executive body of the European Community, from 1981 to 1985.
Thorn was Foreign Minister and Foreign Trade Minister of Luxembourg from 1969 to 1980, Prime Minister from 1974 to 1979 and Minister of Economics from 1977 to 1980.
Although Thorn was not considered a very forceful Commission President, during his term of office the Commission continued to expand its power, both at the expense of the national governments of EC members, and of the European Parliament, with which the Commission engaged in a constant power struggle.

Gaston E. Thorn, Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affaire and Foreign Trade of Luxembourg, was today elected President of the thirtieth session of the General Assembly.
Thorn was arrested by the occupying forces during the Second World War and spent several months in a correction camp.
Thorn was a member of the European Parliament from 1959 to 1969, holding the following positions during this period: Vice-Chairman of the Liberal Group Chairman of the Developing Countries Committee and Chairman of the Joint Committee of the European Economic Community and Associated African and Malagasy States.

Gaston Thorn was born in Luxembourg on September 3, 1928.
In 1943 the 15-year-old Thorn also spent some months in a Nazi "correction camp" for having organized a student protest at his school against compulsory antiaircraft drills and the enforced recruitment of Luxembourg citizens into the German army.
At the end of the war he studied law at the universities of Montpellier, Lausanne, and Paris and was later admitted to the Luxembourg bar.
