DG DISPATCH - ACG: Diverticulitis, GI Bleeding Must Be Treated By Specialists   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Provenzale based her conclusions on an analysis of 2,350 articles from the medical literature that was undertaken to evaluate the care provided by gastroenterologists and generalists (internists, family practitioners and general surgeons) for a range of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions.
Compared to general surgeons and family practitioners, the care provided by gastroenterologists for GI bleeding and diverticulitis significantly shortened the length of hospitalization, reduced overall costs and decreased the time from endoscopy to discharge, she said.
Overall, 85 percent of gastroenterologists correctly diagnosed celiac disease versus 63 percent of internists and seven percent of general surgeons and more adequately diagnosed colorectal cancer and prescribed antimicrobials for peptic ulcer disease based on guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

British Medical Journal: Risk among gastroenterologists of acquiring Helicobacter pylori infection' case-control study
As many patients undergoing endoscopy are positive for H pylori, gastroenterologists are likely to be exposed to infected saliva and gastric juice, and this could increase their risk of acquiring H pylori infection.
Between 1989 and 1991, 92 gastroenterologists and 168 healthy control subjects matched for age and race were investigated by using a questionnaire and a [sup.13]C urea breath test.

ACP Online - Deselecting Gastroenterologists In Managed Care Networks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
We are concerned that the Empire policy makes an arbitrary decision regarding the appropriate setting in which the gastroenterologist furnishes these procedures without regard for the condition of each individual patient.
The rationale contained in the letter that "a recent study by the federal government [that] demonstrates that all three of these sites are equally safe and effective for properly selected patient" fails to provide adequate justification for a policy with such dramatic patient care implications.
We are interested in receiving additional information on the Empire process for deselecting gastroenterologists from its networks based on site of service for upper endoscopies and colonoscopies because we are concerned about its impact on patient care.

Although other types of physicians perform some of the same procedures as gastroenterologists, health plans indicated that they could not successfully market a health benefits product in the Lehigh Valley area if gastroenterologists were not included on their provider panels.
The Department also rejected the groups' proposal for testing the effects of the merger in the broader geographic market of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Carbon County to the north, the eastern portion of Berks County to the west, and the northern portion of Bucks county to the south.
