Topic: Gate Pa

  GMT GAMES: Project 500
Pa can often be recognized from a distance by their profile on the skyline, such as a flat platform, the 'v' shaped notch of a defensive ditch or a series of terraces cut into the hillside to make level areas.
Pa built for gun fighting (after the pakeha had introduced muskets to the Maori) had loop holes in the base of palisades to enable gun fire, and angled earthworks for flanking fire.
At Ohaeawai Pa in 1845, at Rangiriri in 1864, and again at Gate Pa in 1864, the British and Colonial Forces discovered that a frontal attack on a defended Pa was both ineffective and extremely costly.

 Maori Wars
A Maori Pa was the equivalent to a British fortress, but it took the British until after the first world war to understand the difference between a fortress and a Pa. A "Pa" meant a village, and therefore Pa's, though built for defensive strength, were primarily residential.
The Pa built 5km from the British camp during the Tauranga Campaign was known as 'Gate Pa' for the fact that its palisade looked like a picket fence while a higher part in the middle looked like a gate.
Gate Pa had been appeared to the British as a fairly large strong point which occupied the entire hilltop.

 The Gate Pa
Eight mortars, two howitzers, two naval cannon, and five armstrong guns were used against the pa. The artillery fired unhampered for an hour on the 28 April and for the entire next day until a breach was finally made in the main redoubt the at 4pm.
The British defeat convinced General Cameron of the hopelessness of continuing offensive operations against modern pa. No other attack on a pa seemed as likely to succeed as the one on Gate Pa. Extensive artillery pieces were brought to bear on the pa and the British had a huge numerical advantage.
Neither of these lines were attacked as Cameron did not forget his lesson of learned at Gate Pa. This effectively restricted the amount of land the government could confiscate in the Waikato and allowed the King Movement to remain independent after the war.

Pa said it had gotten too crowded in town, and truthfully, Laura had often begun to hear shots from guns that weren't Pa's gun.
Pa put Laura's head in his lap and stroked her hair while she looked up at him, her legs stretched out across Ma's lap, under Baby Carrie, with her feet on top of Mary's body, who was sleeping against the bulkhead.
Pa had often talked about being late for the flight, and Laura worried that he would decide to press on without her.

The New Zealand Wars - The battle of Gate Pa - New Zealand in History
The Battle of "Gate Pa" (a "pa" is a fortified settlement) is probably the battle which made the greatest impact in the history of the New Zealand Wars.
Gate Pa was situated near the entrance of Tauranga Harbour, and was so named because of a gate which was nearby, and which bordered on land bought by the Church Missionary Society.
After the battle of Gate Pa there was much controversy about the defeat of the elite Imperial troops, heavily armed and far superior in number to the Māori.

Thus, the bias voltage of the PA is controlled in coordination with the required output power level to increase energy efficiency and extend battery life.
For example, the PA output power is less when a smaller RF signal is supplied to the PA. Typically, the PA gate bias value remains at a constant value regardless of the PA output power level.
The PA power supply current is varied in combination with the modulated I and Q signals to provide a smooth ramp-up and ramp-down in the RF signal at the PA output.

I can find no better explanation of who she was and why we remember her and the other valiant and wonderful Christians who were her friends and companions than this portion of a sermon.
There is a stained glass window there, which recalls the bravery of a Maori woman named Heni Te Kirikaramu during the battle of Gate Pa. On 29 April 1864 over three hundred Maori barricaded themselves in two adjacent hilltop fortresses at Gate Pa, surrounded by 1500 better armed British troops.
On the site of the Battle of Gate Pa, there is now an Anglican Church, with a striking memorial to those who died in that battle, and commemorating the bravery and Christian ministry of mercy and compassion under fire of Heni Te Kirikaramu..

Chapter 42: Gate Pa and Te Ranga | NZETC
The place was called “The Gate” by the Europeans at Tauranga, because on this spot, the crown of the ridge, there was a gateway through a post-and-rail fence and ditch and bank which ran across the hill from swamp to swamp.
This wing of the Gate Pa was defended by not more than forty men, besides a brave young half-caste woman, Heni te Kiri-karamu (Heni Pore), already mentioned as having shared in the bush adventures of the Koheriki in the Wairoa Ranges; so that the total garrison of Puke-hinahina did not exceed two hundred and fifty.
He was one of the defenders of the Gate Pa, and in 1901 described the battle to the writer of this History.

In this battle a force of 150 soldiers of the 43rd Foot and 150 men of the Naval Contingent stormed the twin pa near Tauranga connected by a trench, known as "The Gate" because the breach in the palisades made by the Royal Artillery gave the appearance of an open gate.
The Maori objective was to rout three 20-man sections before the pa fell, and massed their tupara (double-barreled shotgun)-armed warriors in the outer trenches for a devastating volley.
