  Encyclopedia: Field-programmable gate array
A field-programmable gate array or FPGA is a semiconductor device used to process digital information, similar to a microprocessor.
It utilizes gate array technology that can be reprogrammed after it is manufactured, rather than having its programming fixed during the manufacturing — a programmable logic device.
In computer science, a lookup table is a data structure, usually an array or associative array, used to replace a runtime computation with a simpler lookup operation.

Gate Arrays provide a wide range of package lineup and high reliability, offering one of most flexible ASIC in all semi-custom devices.
Gate Array ASICs are based on the concept of a GATE, typically formed by 2 N-channel and 2 P-channel transistors.
The difference is that in a Sea-of-gate structure the Gates fill all core area, while in a Channel gate Array dedicated routing channels separate the regular Gate structures.

A field-programmable gate array or FPGA is a semiconductor device containing programmable logic components and programmable interconnects.
The typical basic architecture consists of an array of logic blocks and routing channels.
Then after the synthesis engine has mapped the design to a netlist the netlist is translated to a gate level description where simulation is repeated to confirm the synthesis proceeded without errors.

Altera's Gate Array Conversion Kit will be available immediately at no cost to Altera OEM customers who request it for LSI Logic and Fujitsu arrays in the U.S., and for Mitsubishi arrays in Japan only (due to a distribution agreement Altera has with Mitsubishi).
At a Techmart event in Santa Clara, Calif., last week to preview the Gate Array Conversion Kit, Altera president and CEO Rodney Smith cited research figures from Dataquest showing that currently 80 percent of gate array design starts are below the 100,000-gate level.
As a result of restructuring and consolidation, U.S. gate array suppliers have returned to profitability in the last five years, accelerating a move toward the higher density levels, Mr Smith noted.

Gate arrays are not the fashionable semiconductor place to be.
Because gate arrays are a standard "sea of gates" device where customization is only accomplished at the final metallization step, their clock frequencies don't get above 100MHz and design sizes don't exceed 1.5 million gates.
There's a big slice of the market there in-between where I can offer a gate array solution that is four to eight times less cost and four to eight times less board space.
